Let it go, let it go . . . Oh, Elsa, I wish you were real.

I apologize for the Frozen reference (except that I don’t). “Let it go,” except in a different context, is really the main theme of this book. And it’s not my fault that Frozen has now co-opted that phrase for all time (point of interest: I am not yet sick of the song or the movie because I have carefully limited my exposure, and also I don’t have any children). Faerie After is the final book in the Bones of Faerie trilogy. This review will probably not […]

I got those faerie winter blues.

I liked this one better than Bones of Faerie, but I still had some issues with it. And to be fair, while there was some improvement on some of the things that bugged me from #1, the main reason I enjoyed this one more than the first was that it allowed for more time to be spent in this world and with these characters. (If you’ll recall, my biggest issue with the first book was that it was too short.) Faerie Winter picks up about […]

The Unfamiliar Familiar

April 5, 2014 by Marc 1 Comment

narfna posted a review of Bones of Faerie last week that, while not effusive, piqued my interest enough to get me to go through it this week.  Now I find myself very nearly in lockstep with the review in question.  It feels almost too brief to form anything like a true connection with the characters.  The plot is very nearly a perfunctory thing, a road trip here and back again with as little embellishment along the way as possible.  The characters are, for the most part, thinly […]

Scary magic. Bad Fairies. Wolf people. DEAD BABIES.

March 26, 2014 by narfna 3 Comments

I want to preface this by stating that I reallly wanted to love this book — I used to work at the cafe where Janni wrote I’m sure a large portion of this very book. I served her coffee at least once a week for probably four years. I didn’t realize she was an author, however, until after I had already left that job. I also sat in on a panel she gave at the Tucson Festival of Books last weekend before I’d had a […]
