what a saga (ha) and unexpectedly delightful

The Greenlanders by Jane Smiley

April 4, 2023 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

CW: assault A starkly different recommendation–from The Pale King to this, which couldn’t be more different if you’d tried. There’s more plot in a single paragraph of the latter than in all of the former’s million odd pages…and this book isn’t short by any means. This is a fictionalized reconstruction of the Norwegian settlers of Greenland of the fourteenth century, written in the style of one of those old sagas originally passed down through oral tradition. It’s actually quite hard to sell this one, and I think […]

Moo by Jane Smiley

March 29, 2023 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

“From the outside it was clear that the building known generally as “Old Meats” had eased under the hegemony of horticulture department.” This is a very mid-1990s novel about life on a midwestern college campus. Specifically we are at “Moo U”, which is obviously not it’s real name, but we go with it. We end up with several clues throughout the opening section here about the level of irony and farce we’re suppose to be reading into this novel. For example, nearly every building on […]

A Dangerous Business by Jane Smiley

January 2, 2023 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

“Two months after her husband died on November 12, 1851, Eliza Ripple stopped writing letters to her mother back in Kalamazoo.” This is the newest novel by Jane Smiley, who has now written a million of them. She’s not Joyce Carol Oates, but she’s been publishing for more than 40 years now, and has been pretty prolific. In general, I liked this novel, but it felt a little thin at times, but more so a little underdeveloped. I don’t mean the writing is bad at […]

“Over her golden yard and the glittering hills beyond, into the darkness of the trees…”

Golden Age by Jane Smiley

July 11, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

***Spoilers throughout*** Well, I finished this trilogy and this was a better book than the second one. I think because Smiley starts killing people off in this one, the cast feels less unwieldy and more focused. This book is more of a victory lap in terms of drawing everyone’s narratives to a close. I again had the issue that such dramatic things happen to these people that it feels unrealistic and kept taking me out of the narrative. Any time I spend most of the […]

A Disappointing and Weirdly Removed Second Book in the Trilogy

Early Warning by Jane Smiley

June 16, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I’ve read the first book in this trilogy (Some Luck) two or three times and really enjoy its structure and descriptions of farm and internal life. I therefore read this second book with interest, but I don’t think it was as good as the first one and I don’t think I would reread it. I’m still going to read the third one because these are transporting and feel like you’re watching a soap opera, so it’s good train commute reading. Not bad enough to stop […]

“[She] knew that this was her life. Better to be immersed in it than to see it from afar.”

Some Luck by Jane Smiley

June 9, 2022 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I really enjoy this book and I think this is my second or third time reading it. Some Luck follows the Langdon family, who start off as farmers in Iowa. Each chapter is one year in their lives, and that concept makes this book very readable, as it moves along at a fast pace. This is the first book in a trilogy and covers 1920 to 1953. I think the thing that makes this book more than a gimmick is Jane Smiley’s beautiful prose — there are […]
