I’ve been looking forward to reading this book for a while and it did not disappoint. Especially for a debut novel, it’s a very well put together story. I’m a bit retroactively disappointed that it didn’t win the Goodreads choice awards, but I suppose that’s to be expected. The Dry is a competent and engaging mystery thriller that’s set in a small farming community in Australia. It’s one of those books where the setting is as much of a character as the human characters, as the oppressive heat and dust provoke malevolent despair in the residents, which in turn breeds violence.
