A book I ardently admire and love

May 22, 2014 by bonnie 6 Comments

It’s a universally-acknowledged truth around my house that a bit of Austen is a refreshing palate-cleanser. It’s been a few years since I read Pride and Prejudice, so I thought it high time for another visit with an old friend. Plus, I have cooked up this scheme for the next month: read Death Comes to Pemberley (especially since the adaptation is coming to Masterpiece!), Longbourn, and the Bridget Jones’s Diary set (I’ve read the first two and have finally overcome my reluctance to read the […]

Badly Done, Emma. Well done, Jane.

April 26, 2014 by bonnie 2 Comments

It was my turn to choose the next book for my book club, and I chose Jane Austen. Duh. I mean: anyone who knows me in real life or who has followed my blog long enough knows about my completely sane, married-woman-who-somehow-manages-to-be-attracted-to-a-flesh-and-blood-man-even-after-lusting-after-Darcy obsession with Austen. But instead of picking a book where I am afraid we can get kind of fangirlish (Pride and Prejudice? I still love you. Call me), I wanted to read something less comfortable. Something that would maybe challenge us a bit. […]

A Jane Austen Education

April 7, 2014 by kimberleybear Leave a Comment

Quick Synopsis: A young man learns that some of life’s most important lessons can be found in the works of Jane Austen Quick Review: Maybe a bit too constructed to be a true memoir, this is at least an interesting take on Austen and what one guy believes her works say about growing up and becoming a more decent person Read the full review here

No, It’s Not Just the Dresses

March 13, 2014 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

I fell in love with Jane Austen sometime around 1996. I think the first time I read one of her books was when it was assigned my sophomore year of high school, and I’m pretty sure it was Pride and Prejudice but it may have been Sense and Sensibility. I’m just not sure anymore. In the intervening years I have consumed all six of her major novels, getting the final one read last year, and have partaken in many, but certainly not all, of the […]

Mr. Wickham was so much worse than I ever imagined.

I’ve read Pride & Prejudice a handful of times, and am, in general, a big fan of Jane Austen (my personal favorite is Persuasion). And yes, I’ve fallen into the trap of reading prequels and sequels and spinoffs of varied quality. So I wasn’t in a huge hurry to read Longbourn. But I saw it at the library, and then remembered a CBR review from last year written by popcultureboy that convinced me to read it. And I’m so glad I did. Easily the best of the […]
