Mary Robinette Kowal is a heroine

December 31, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

So you know how I said that Mary Robinette Kowal’s Glamour in Glass was even better than Shades of Milk and Honey? Well, the good news is that the series just gets better and better! I’m excited–I love “finding” an author whose books are high-quality reads. I enjoyed this book immensely. The glamourist couple Jane and David Vincent have decided to accept a commission in London, after recovering from their time in Belgium. There, Jane decides to take her sister Melody along, hopefully to find […]

More delicious Jane Austen-style fantasy

December 19, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I read Shades of Milk and Honey earlier this year for CBR and greatly enjoyed it. It was a terrific blend of Regency fun and original fantasy. The, I discovered that there was an entire series. It’s sort of like waking up one morning to discover an entire season of Arrested Development on Netflix, amirite? Of course, I went to the library to get the other three books (correction: my home library had books 3 and 4; I went to a neighboring library in the […]

Jane Austen meets Gosford Park and Downton Abbey

November 14, 2014 by Sophia 3 Comments

“The room was dull now, and meaningless, with the young ladies gone from it. They were both lovely, almost luminous. And Sarah was, she knew, as she slipped along the servants’ corridor, and then up the stairs to the attic to hang her new dress on the rail, just one of the many shadows that ebbed and tugged at the edges of the light.” (53) It’s one thing to tell a new story with the basic plot of Austen’s novels, such as Bridget Jones’s Diary […]

Jane Austen meets Jonathan Strange and we all win.

November 8, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Paging Jane Austen enthusiasts! Paging Jane Austen enthusiasts! Here’s an enjoyable and delightful read that merges Austen’s Regency-era novel of manners with fantasy and science fiction. It’s delightful and entertaining and innovative at once. My sister recommended this book to me–and since I recommend so many books to her, it seemed only fair to read one of her choices. So glad that I did! Jane Ellsworth is a single woman in her late twenties, part of a respectable family and a skilled glamourist. While her […]

Science fiction young adult Jane Austen. It’s good, I promise

September 18, 2014 by Malin 5 Comments

Laziness makes me resort to the Goodreads synopsis once again: It’s been several generations since a genetic experiment gone wrong caused the Reduction, decimating humanity and giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology. Elliot North has always known her place in the world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists are jumpstarting the wheel of […]

“Things could change so entirely, in a heartbeat; the world could be made entirely anew, because someone was kind.”

September 11, 2014 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I love Jane Austen. I know she’s not for everyone, but I definitely have a soft spot for the author. Due to this soft spot I limit what I partake of in the Austen companion materials, no matter how long they’ve been a part of the Austen experience. The one that seems to have the most is Pride and Prejudice.  I read Mr. Darcy’s Diary for Cannonball Read IV, but that experience and reading less than stellar reviews has kept me from reading Death Comes […]
