This is the fifth in my series of posts wherein I write reviews for classic books in the form of letters to the characters so as to avoid actually writing a review for a book that has been written about by everyone’s mother’s second cousin’s uncle twice removed from a monkey. I’m re-reading all of Jane Austen’s books in 2016, and it has so far been a fun experience. July was Emma month, and I was very much looking forward to it, since I’ve liked it more and more every time […]
Dear Fake Character People: An Open Letter to (most of) the Characters in Mansfield Park
This is the fourth in my series of posts wherein I get weird and write reviews for classic books in the form of letters to the characters. I’m re-reading all of Jane Austen’s books in 2016, and it has so far been lovely, even with this one. May was Mansfield Park month, and I was looking forward to it, as it has been my least favorite Austen since I first read it, and thought that might make for an interesting reading experience. In fact, until now, it’s the only one of her books I […]
This is the only version where I don’t want to murder Lydia.
I’m not sure just how many different re-tellings I’ve read of Pride and Prejudice. At least six — Bridget Jones’ Diary, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Death Comes to Pemberly, a manga version of P & P, Longbourn, and Eligible — but really, I might have read a few more. I probably have. But this one stands out a bit for me, because I really felt like I knew the characters from watching the youtube videos. For those who are unaware, there was a delightful web series […]
A delightful Austen novel made into a delightful Austen adaptation
Finally, I am all caught up with The Austen Project! There really are no excuses for me to put off The Lizzie Bennet Diaries now. Ahem. Anyway, I went into Northanger Abbey with high hopes, because I genuinely like the original sooooo much. I did my Master’s Thesis on the two film adaptations (the 1980s film is suuuuper campy and not all that great, the 2007 film is deliciously aces and full of female sexual empowerment in ways that Jane Austen would totally approve of […]
Jane Austen-lite
After reading Eligible, I decided that it was high time I tackled the other two Austen Project novels. I started with Sense and Sensibility, because I had heard the least about it, both on CBR and the internet in general. I was especially curious to see how the adaptation fared, since Austen’s original seems fairly tied to Regency laws (I’m thinking about the patrilineal inheritance plot points, especially). Also, there are a lot of colorful and also milquetoast characters that are hard to emulate without […]
Manipulative, devilish heroine the kind you love to hate
Lady Susan is a novella by Jane Austen, done mostly in epistolary format. I was completely unaware that this novella even existed until I saw the recent movie Love and Friendship which was developed from this book. I borrowed it from a friend and quickly devoured it. The plot is pretty simple. Lady Susan, recently widowed and extremely poor, goes to stay with her brother-in-law and his wife. She was is plagued by scandal and has a reputation for being a flirt. While in Churchill […]
