I take no leave of you and send no compliments to your mother

January 6, 2018 by yesknopemaybe 4 Comments

Oh dear, where to start with this one. I wanted to like it, I really did! But ultimately this book was such a let down. It reeled me in by professing to be a contemporary, gender swapped version of Pride and Prejudice. And on the surface, it is. Darcy Fitzwilliam is 29 and works in New York City as a partner in the financial district. She has no friends, no romantic life, but buckets of money. When her mom has a heart attack, she rushes […]

An oldie, but a goodie

December 30, 2017 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

The other day my boss, who loves books, told me she hadn’t read any Jane Austen. Luckily we have the kind of relationship that made it possible for me to let loose a string of incredulous profanities. She loves subtle, witty, clever books with great characters so Austen is a perfect fit. I went in search of audiobook versions I could send her and realized Pride and Prejudice is the only full length Austen book I don’t own in audio form. Luckily, Prime members get […]

A new side of Jane Austen!

December 28, 2017 by bonnie Leave a Comment

As you all know by now, I am a Jane Austen fangirl, and the people in my life support that fandom. I own several Austen mugs, film and TV adaptations, and paraphernalia of all sorts. My in-laws found a compilation of Austen writings, called The Wicked Wit of Jane Austen. I’m normally not a huge person for compilations, as I’d often just rather read the books themselves, but I did find this one unique. I’m glad my in-laws gave this to me to add to […]

When Emma Thompson Reads, You Listen

November 11, 2017 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

While I love almost all things Jane Austen, I have a slightly bumpy history with Northanger Abbey. I read it for the first time back in 2013 when I was trying to make sure I had read all of her major works, and this was my last (I still have the minor works, but I’m in no rush with those). 2013 is in some ways my dark Cannonball year. I hit a major reading slump during a depressive episode and didn’t read for months at […]

What more can I say? What more can I do? I gave this up to you. I know this much is true.

June 6, 2017 by vel veeter 3 Comments

I am completing and re-reading a lot of Jane Austen this year. I already read her “Juvenalia” as they call a young writer’s materials and odds and ends. I read Sense and Sensibility for the first time earlier. Now I return to Pride and Prejudice for one more go. So what more can I say? One, do you think Jay-Z has read this book? I can’t think of why not. Two, my roommate last year got a super fat kitten and named him Fitz, after Darcy. Three, for […]

All’s Fair in Love and Dragonfire.

May 23, 2017 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

This book really shouldn’t work as well as it does. I was expecting something more like Pride & Prejudice & Zombies — a humorous retelling of the tale of Elizabeth and Darcy but this time with dragons instead of zombies. And yes, this book has dragons, but it leaves P&P&Z in the dust. Where that book was trying so hard to be a clever mashup of genres, this one is just a great story that happens to be an homage to a favorite classic.** Aliza […]
