Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They appear as rock stars and are loved and hated in equal measure. In two years, they are all dead. The lesson they need to learn is: just because you’re immortal, doesn’t mean you’re going to live forever. In the first volume of The Wicked + The Divine we are introduced to Laura, a seventeen-year-old from London who is utterly devoted to the various recently incarnated gods, who appear as rock stars of various genres all over the city. After […]
So Many Religious Puns…
…And I’ve attempted to avoid all of them. I obviously enjoyed Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s The Wicked and the Divine enough to read the issues again, this time as a collected trade paperback titled The Faust Act. I’ve been following the series since I started buying comics again, roughly a year ago, and I’ve enjoyed the pair’s original work, following them from Phonogram and so forth. But this review is about The Wicked and the Divine. The premise is this: a pantheon of gods […]
Consider me an official fangirl
Spoilers for Volume 1. The second volume of The Wicked + The Divine only continues to amaze and surprise. I’m so glad I’ve finally found a series I can properly fangirl over. In this volume, Laura, the main character, is dealing with her grief over the surprising and tragic death of Lucifer, the god she grew close to in the first installment. She’s clearly numb to the rest of the world and the rest of the gods until she’s pulled back in by some new […]
Gods living as humans, what could go wrong?
This is the graphic novel I’ve been looking for. I’ve enjoyed exploring more in the genre this year, but up until this point, none of them (aside from a few nonfiction graphic novels and possibly Nimona) have really struck me as using the medium to their full advantage, to become something more than a fun little story that I’ll never think about again. The Wicked + The Divine is very, very promising and I really hope the next installments live up to it. The story […]
Completing the Set
I was lukewarm about the first volume, so volume 2 was going to be the great decider. I have way too many series and other graphic novels to read. And yet, I still don’t know if I like The Wicked + The Divine, but I do know I’ll buy volume 3 next year. The only feeling I have on this series that I can articulate is that: I’m intrigued. That doesn’t mean I like it, but I also don’t not like it. The Pantheon gets […]
Why Two Years?
I’m still not sure if I like this one or not, but I’m definitely intrigued by this new series. Sometimes I’m okay with the author taking a sink or swim approach for the reader; either you’ll pick up the story as it goes along or you’ll spend too much time stressing the details and give up in frustration. It usually depends on the author, with the right one, I feel like I at least have someone in a rowboat encouraging me to press on. But […]
