Reviewing a book in the middle of an ongoing series is difficult. If the reader is unfamiliar with the series, you don’t want to give too much away in case the series sounds interesting. However, how can you discuss even minor plot points and character development unless you talk at least a little about what’s currently happening and who is around to see it? All that to say, this review has some necessary minor spoilers of The Expanse series, but me saying, “The Grand Canyon […]
Sgt. Bobbie Draper Ain’t No Fortunate Son in The Expanse (Book Two)!
It’s important to look at the sunny side of life. While I work in a city with an awful commute, I also have the chance to listen to a bunch of audiobooks. Right now I’m working through James S.A. Corey’s series The Expanse. Book one was recently reviewed on this very site, and book two is reviewed here. (For the record, Jefferson Mays’ reading of the books is fun. He does better with the Belter accents than I ever could in my own head.) Whereas book one […]
Expanse Books > Expanse SyFy Show
I’ve been an Amazon Prime subscriber for a long time because our family orders so much in the way of baby supplies and dog food. In an attempt to get the most bang for the buck, we’ve dropped Netflix in favor of using Prime Video more. We’ve finally gotten around to watching shows like Justified (now an all-time favorite), and we’ve also enjoyed originals like Red Oaks. One show I didn’t know much about that we found was SyFy’s “The Expanse”. The show is based […]
Savoring this series
I love starting a book I know I’m going to love. That warm anticipatory glow makes those first pages even better. This series (this is book four) never disappoints. I was talking to a fellow science fiction fan on a plane, and we were lamenting that with sci-fi, often you get great characters OR a great story, but rarely both. With the Expanse series, you get it all: people you want to spend more time with, original and gripping stories, and excellent writing. In the […]
Second Time Around
Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey (2011) – It’s terrible getting halfway through a 750-page book and realizing you’ve read it before. The good news is that the story is so good that I didn’t care. I like a good spaceship crew story and this one combines space opera with a good mystery and a love story. The story is told by the two strong male protagonists, Miller, an alcoholic policeman on Ceres, and Holden, an executive officer aboard an ice mover. When Holden’s ship […]
If Your Heels Are Nimble and Light
Babylon’s Ashes is book six in The Expanse series, a series that I love and adore. However, this book took me four months to read. FOUR MONTHS. I kept putting it down for weeks at a time and I feel a little weird about that. I really, honestly like this book. There are a couple of reasons for that, but I feel like I need to make it clear that I really, really do love this book. If I were a tween with a notebook, […]
