Prior to getting into this book, I should point out that this is a review of the fifth book in an ongoing series called The Expanse. I’ll just summarize for you by saying t’s an awesome, space opera series that I’d recommend to anyone. I will try not to spoil anything from this or previous books, but I’m only human, sasa ke? While the predecessor to this book, Cibola Burn, was dark, this book is really dark. A problem with an ongoing series is that you […]
We’re back in business, baby!
Don’t read this review if you’re planning to read the book. After my unfortunately middling review of book 6 (largely thanks to the Marvel-esque villain problem) I am so happy to report that holy COW we are back! Also please forgive typos, tangents, and the like – I am suffering so mightily from a terrible jet lag. I’m going to beef up these first few sentences of the review because while I hate to call it a spoiler (given that it’s revealed in, like, literally […]
There’s just always so much to digest
Book 6! I did it! And before I got book 7 from the library! I have covered before how much I love these books. Grown up me reading these is like teenage me reading the Star Wars expanded universe. This one may have been a bit of a letdown after how much I loved book 5 (don’t ask me the specific title, because that is long gone), but the standard is so high that doesn’t mean much. Still would recommend over and over and over. […]
Can I skip from book 1 to book 4 and just see how it ends?
This book is written by half of the author team that Voltrons into James S.A. Corey. Unfortunately, that means my expectations going into it were VERY high. It was an absolutely fine book, but A of all, it was fantasy, not sci-fi as the recommender claimed; and second of B, it was pretty standard fare for fantasy. In this fantasy land, poets hold the highest honor in the land, because they can capture concepts and give them form and volition. Once captured, though, the anthropomorphized […]
Nemesis Games
Nemesis Games by James S.A. Corey
You guuuuuuuuys. This one was so good. I think they’re ALL good, but I know some people struggled more with book four. I hope nobody struggled with this one, because it got deeper into these characters that we already know and love, and I was legit worried about the heightened levels of peril. Which seems surprising, given how often the crew of the Rocinante finds themselves in the midst of universe-spanning drama. In book five of the Expanse series, our intrepid crew finds themselves separated. […]
Another 5-star review from this Expanse stan
This series has become essentially un-reviewable for me. I give every installment either four or five stars, and I have the same good things to say about every one. Without digging deeper into more specific plot points, which I don’t tend to do in my reviews, there aren’t a lot of new ways to praise overall themes or achievement in character development. However, Persepolis Rising is actually a bit different from its predecessors, particularly in that last respect. It opens after a considerable time-jump from […]
