Harry’s long dark night of the soul.

May 30, 2018 by narfna 8 Comments

See, this is why we need half stars. This book right here. This is not a five star book for me, but I liked it better than four stars, also, and feel weird rating it the same as other books I’ve rated four stars and enjoyed less. It is a perfect encapsulation of the 4.5 star book. So round up or down? Up or down? It is a terrible decision. Don’t read on if you haven’t read through book twelve. Spoilers ahoy. A little bit […]

Still just a book in this series.

It turns out I didn’t remember most of this book, and I think that’s because, well, it’s not really that memorable? Unfortunately this has turned out to be the one book in the series so far that I haven’t liked more on re-read. In fact, I may have liked it a little less, what with not listening to the audio this time around, and it feeling sort of sloggy. It’s not that what’s here is bad, just, I don’t know . . . not super […]

Thanks, Rainbow. I can always count on you.

When I heard that Cannonball favorite Rainbow Rowell was joining the Marvel team, I was certainly intrigued. I’m not a huge Marvel fangirl, but I had faith that Rainbow wouldn’t sign on to a project that wasn’t worthy of her. So, at her urging, I went to the library to pick up the first two volumes of the original Runaways, written by the always great Brian K. Vaughan. And, of course, Rainbow was right. I was immediately taken in and wanted more.* Here’s a quick […]

She is the fairies’ midwife, and she comes in shape no bigger than an agate stone on the forefinger of an alderman…or at least that’s what Simon LeBon told me.

My interest in Shakespeare came from watching a Duran Duran video when I was in the 8th grade. The song was Waiting for the Nightboat, and watching it led me to reading Romeo & Juliet for the first time. Who was this Queen Mab? And why was Simon LeBon so afraid of her? Junior High me needed to know. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ09HcvYQTY&w=560&h=315] All of this came back to me while listening to my Audible boyfriend James Marsters read Summer Knight to me last week. In the fourth installment […]

These audiobooks are great. But they’re also terrible. Hells bells, I don’t know what I think.

I’ve now read the first three installments in the Harry Dresden series. Or, to be more specific, I’ve now listened to James Marsters read me the first three installments in the Harry Dresden series. And I still don’t really know what I think. Let me explain. I have no idea what is going on in these books. Yes, I understand that Harry is a wizard who lives in Chicago. I get that he works indirectly with the police and with other, less reputable members of […]

Susan is a problem.

My initial review of this book cracks me up (see below). Yeah, sure, Ashley. Final verdict. Not your cup. Woosh woosh woosh (that was the sound of time passing) oh wait, you love this series now, you bobo. Since I finally fell in love with this series around book ten or so (it was just “like” from book four on), I’ve theorized that if I were ever to revisit the first three books I would feel differently about them, and that turned out to be […]
