SilverFin: The Graphic Novel by Charlie Higson

February 11, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I must have read this in the novel format as this morning, when sitting down to write my review, everything seemed to feel familiar. It also could be that this is a very common mystery/adventure story of a young boy trying to find out why another boy went missing, making friends and figuring out what the plan of the villain is (who of course is the father of the bully the boy must deal with at school). SilverFin: The Graphic Novel is an interpretation of […]

Finger. Goldfinger.

September 1, 2018 by Jake 1 Comment

Read for CBR10 Bingo: Birthday between August and November. The fictional James Bond’s birthday has been listed in several sources as November 11. I’ve gotten into Anthony Horowitz’s work this past year so when I saw his James Bond book at a used bookstore, I grabbed it. I later discovered it was a direct sequel to Ian Fleming’s Goldfinger. I hadn’t read Fleming for several years but I remembered liking Casino Royale, warts and all, so I decided to pick it up. Ah man. I’m not a James […]

A Case Where the Book and Movie have *VASTLY* Different Plots

February 21, 2017 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

It would appear that I am in the minority as regards my opinions regarding Moonraker, the third James Bond novel by Sir Ian Fleming. I didn’t much enjoy it. Moonraker is back to the three-act structure we found in Casino Royale, and the three acts are decidedly similar. Act one is background knowledge via gambling, act two is the discovery of the mission and its true scope, act three is the part where Bond makes his moves and recovers from the physical cost of the […]

“Hm,’ said Bond. ‘Bogeyman stuff.”

September 10, 2016 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I had fallen off pace for my goal this year (I’m still 2 books behind, better than the 8 I was a month ago), and an Audible coupon delivered a few, short, James Bond books to my queue. Surely I could knock out an under 7-hour book in under a week of commuting? Well, that plan only works if the book is enjoyable and you can make yourself listen to it. A quick note: my problems with this book were not the narration stylings of […]

Fleming Hid a Kissing Book in His Third Act

August 3, 2016 by faintingviolet 7 Comments

Hello Cannonball friends, did you miss me? It’s been nearly 4 weeks since my last review. Being gone so long as left me feeling a bit like this: I have been reading most of the time, but I’m working through two very dense books (Children of God by Mary Doria Russell and House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende) during a very busy time for me at work (Ah, summer camp season). So in order to get back on the reviewing bandwagon, I decided a […]

Diamonds, Dames, and Danger!

February 12, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

I’ve been reading the Ian Fleming Bond books for the last couple of years  in order of release. Diamonds Are Forever is the 4th full length Bond novel and like its predecessors much more focused on tension and mystery than over the top action and unbelievable circumstances. This time out, the British secret service has tasked Bond with discovering the head of a diamond smuggling operation. This assignment pits Bond against a crime organization known as the Spang Brothers and puts him in the company […]
