Skarsgård or Curry?

IT by Stephen King

Katabasis by R.F. Kuang

October 31, 2025 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Two Halloween-ish reads this month! I’ve been lagging behind a bit and that’s mostly to do with the fact that I ended up picking two hefty tomes that I didn’t enjoy all that much. First up: Stephen King’s IT.  We all know the story: mysterious killer clown kills children in `the small town of Derry, is chased by a group of people, first as children, then as adults. My dad made me watch the film when I was six. That’s all you need to know […]

Five stars with some qualifications for this White Whale book.

It by Stephen King

Well, I did it. I did It. (I’m sure this is adding so much to the ongoing pun-based conversation surrounding this book.) I started this book on January 22nd, and finished it on January 30th. That is a long time to read a book for me, especially at the beginning of the year, when I like to get my momentum up and running with shorter, exciting books. But I’m doing the whole TBR Jar thing this year, and I pulled It out almost immediately. When […]

In which I rewrite the movie a little

September 25, 2017 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

So I have read this book a number of times starting in 5th grade when I was the same age as the kids. I am almost the same age as the adults, so this is interesting to me. I also recently saw the movie, and it was fine. But it had the same problem any movie version of any book that greatly outdistances its adaptation has: it just can’t take the time it needs to do the job correctly. Things I liked about the movie: […]

Everything down here floats…

September 23, 2017 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I’m on the tail-end of a monstrously disruptive cold, so I had to scrap my plans of having this review out by the 21st, Stephen King’s septuagenarian birthday. In the realm of missed opportunities, this rates as a fairly minor disappointment, but it would’ve fairly cool nonetheless. It is one of the most quintessentially “Stephen King” stories, and it’s recent and wildly successful adaptation should, perhaps, not be seen as particularly surprising. In my mind, it holds a premier place in his oeuvre, alongside The […]

Clown disquiet

February 3, 2016 by Griever0211 1 Comment

I bought this monster of a book quite a while ago and finally decided to get my act together and read it on my two week holiday. I have read some of Stephen King’s books before and really enjoyed his writing style, especially Carrie. I would cautiously label his style ‘intellectual horror’. It did not disappoint. Clown disquiet aside, the idea that It could take on the shape of any of the children’s fears was fascinating. I loved the line drawn between adult and child […]

See the turtle of enormous girth! On his shell he holds the earth.

I recently joined Audible, and have been trying to navigate the system — when to use a credit, when to pay, what to put on my wish list, etc. For my first book, I selected the 40+ hour-long It. I hadn’t read It since I was in high school, when I remember it scared me to death. But I’ve been on a bit of a Dark Tower Universe kick, enjoying all of the links between Stephen King’s books and trying to figure out how they […]
