Tzimmes for Tzipporah by Megan Hoyt

Just One Little Light by Kat Yeh

June 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It’s time for another picture book round up review. This time there are two books I enjoyed reading, but did not feel I could honestly do a full review of. Both stories are sweet, but are not necessarily for everyone.  Are you looking for a new book about getting out and about on the farm? Well Tzimmes for Tzipporah is a new book (or will be in September 2023) dealing with a farm during harvest time. It is written by Megan Hoyt and Christine Battuz […]

The Mouse Who Carried a House on His Back by Jonathan Stutzman

July 8, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The message to The Mouse Who Carried a House on His Back by Jonathan Stutzman might be slightly above many picture book readers/listeners (or to booksellers who were dead-stinking-tired because they had not slept in a few days). In other words, know your reader. The concept is simple: Vincent travels wherever they must go. They are a mouse with boots on their feet, had on head and the house on his back. The spot on a grassy hill calls him. He puts the house down, […]

New York Times Book Review told us:

Just Because by Mac Barnett

I Miss My Grandpa by Jin Xiaoling

The Famer by Abadia Ximo

December 13, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

New York Times Book Review told us a few months back what their 67th annual list of Best Illustrated Children’s Books for 2019 was. I picked up one or two here and there and today I found myself reading three. My “like” of Just Because by Mac Barnett comes from Isabelle Arsenault’s illustrations. They are simple, with a lack of a traditional color, but the details are far from simplistic. The story (a child asking all the questions even many adults want to know) is […]

Introducing Your Friend and Mine: The Honeybee

August 10, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This a solid 4.5 as the only issue I have is that I would have liked more facts at the end or even more within the text of the story. This is a poetic story about our friend, The Honeybee. Kirsten Hall and Isabelle Arsenault have created a story that the adult is not going to mind rereading. It has a lot to it, and while there is not a lot of traditional action, this is a lot going on. The rhyming text reminded me […]

A picture book for grownups

January 18, 2018 by soapyme Leave a Comment

I think that there must be a moment during everyone’s childhood when you realize that adults are not infallible, not even your own parents. Over twenty years later, I can still remember my own personal moment, and those feelings are captured perfectly in Louis Undercover, written by playwright Fanny Britt and beautifully illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault. Louis is a young boy whose parents have separated. He and his little brother, Truffle, are shuttled between their mother’s apartment in the city and their father’s house in the […]
