Stays the Queen

The Hunter by Tana French

March 18, 2024 by Jake 2 Comments

Tana French is our best living crime writer. Crime fiction, at its best explores the true nature of human beings when at their worst. If there are no atheists in fox holes, there are no angels with guns in their hands. What motivates us to sin? What are the consequences? Why do we commit evil upon our fellow human being? The best writers use their characters rather than their plots to explore this. Tana French doesn’t create characters as much as introduce their fully-lived selves. […]

In the Woods by Tana French

December 30, 2023 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I may have read fewer books this year but made an effort to start reading the ones I own. I owe it to my bookshelves to continue the trend in 2024. Tana French’s In the Woods has been on my shelf for way too long. It lived up to all the expectations from past CBR reviews. And I got to “travel” to Dublin for the CBR15 passport challenge. CBR15 Passport Challenge: Books from different countries (book 1 of 3) The first Dublin Murder Squad novel […]

Doors Should Stay Closed

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

September 29, 2023 by Jake Leave a Comment

This book messed with me in a real way. It left me feeling very sad. Impossible to say how without revealing the ending. But the whole book is…well it’s something. A woman whose trauma-informed behavior makes her not understand societal norms. The reader starts with that and slowly unpacks everything. Everything. I’m usually nervous when writers try to write neurodiverse characters. I liked Motherless Brooklyn the second time around but am not a huge fan of how Lethem wrote Lionel Essrog. I’ve never been able to get […]

A little pride and culture

I call myself a “book pusher,” but I am not at the top of this book train. I have my own pusher, Maya at Barefoot Books. And they have Barefoot behind them. And behind this publisher are the wonderful authors that put our wonderful books. And in April 2024 two very different, but equally awesome books will be out. And I get to push them on you… I mean introduce you to them. And you will be so happy for this introduction you will push […]

Unquestionably the worst month in the calendar. Red Cat*** It’s not the writer’s fault that I just finished Robert Kolker’s excellent Lost Girls in light of the apprehension of the man they think is the Gilgo Beach murderer. But my threshold for murdered sex workers was low going into this. I only finished it because it filled a specific square for my library summer reading game. It’s not bad; the mystery is done well but it doesn’t stand out as far as the rest of […]
