“There isn’t ever going to be an end,” she said. “The point is that people have to continue always speaking up and not being afraid.”

She Said by Jodi Kantor & Megan Twohey

September 4, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

Everybody said this was a good read, and it was. I love journalism books, and this was one of the truest to that form. In many ways, Kantor and Twohey had to make sure it was, that they crossed every ‘T’ and dotted every ‘I’ just so they didn’t leave themselves open to legal action, or worse, from the subjects of their investigation. This isn’t a long book, but it packs a big punch. Twohey and Kantor are extremely detailed in documenting their investigation, how […]

She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story that Helped Ignite a Movement by Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey

I was telling a friend when I sat down to write this review that I was having a tough time finding my way in. When I reviewed Ronan Farrow’s Catch and Kill, I was able to talk about him as part of the review, since he put himself on the page as part of the writing, and that was my way in to getting my thoughts down. That book was about both the harassment and abuse of women by men in power and the efforts […]

Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators by Ronan Farrow

January 2, 2020 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

I knew going into it that I would enjoy Catch and Kill, because it’s a genre I enjoy, it’s a writer I like, and a topic I was interested in. I just wasn’t sure how much I really needed to read it, considering I’d just finished She Said a month or two earlier and they’re about the same thing. My takeaway is that these are two great books, on the same topic, that read in completely different ways. I’m glad I read both of them. […]

The scariest book I’ve read this year.

December 5, 2019 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Do you think genetically engineered invasive parasites are scary? How about child kidnapping and mind control? Prehistoric spider swarms? Nefarious tunnels in near-pitch black darkness? Shape shifting murders? Well, I can safely tell you that none of those terrifying topics compare to the content of the Troll Hunter. The book, written by Australian investigative journalist Ginger Gorman, starts by setting the scene. In 2013, and she’s a reporter doing a lighthearted and feel-good story for her local media outlet about a same-sex couple and their […]

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou

November 27, 2019 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

I think by now most of us have heard at least the outline of the story told in Bad Blood: Elizabeth Holmes, the youngest self-made female billionaire (and founder of Theranos) who somehow misled and deceived investors and board members into believing she had revolutionized blood testing and was able to test for literally hundreds of conditions using a single drop of blood. If it were true, it would have changed the world, but, of course, it wasn’t true. Holmes is set to go on […]

Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.

She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey

October 7, 2019 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

You’ll read a lot of reviews about how this book is “gripping” and “thrilling” and “riveting,” and I’m not going to argue with any of it. For the first two-thirds of this book, I couldn’t put it down. I knew what was going to happen, but I really couldn’t stop reading. I looked forward to reading all day when I was at work. She Said is the story of how New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey investigated decades of rumors about producer […]
