Self discovery and gender with a little musical accompaniment

A Song for You and I by K. O'Neill

January 14, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I always enjoy K. O’Neill’s writing, however, I found A Song for You and I a smidgen not as strong as usual. I think the issue was I was reading via an online reader copy and there were black and white images and not the full color illustrations of the final product. And since the book relies on the illustrations for most of the story, it was not what I needed. However, the story of being “other” and the fear and confusion that produces is […]

So Much for Love: How I Survived a Toxic Relationship by Sophie Lambda

February 15, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport,already own It might have been ironic or appropriate that I finished this book on Valentine’s Day. But regardless, So Much for Love: How I Survived a Toxic Relationship Sophie Lambada’s memoir is a very strong, humorous, serious, clever, delightful read. Lambda’s journey is inspiring, relatable, and thoughtful. The amazing art that is both funny and powerful, gives the emotion of the words that are packed into fast-paced pages (it only took me two days to read, and had I started earlier in the evening, […]

The biggest piece of genius ever written or one big pile of steaming crap

City Monster by Reza Farazmand

November 10, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you like the comic, Poorly Drawn Lines, or stoner literature in general, this story by Reza Farazmand, called City Monster (which is about nothing and about a lot of s**t), is your next read. I am not sure what else I can say about this Monster, his sort of Ghost roommate, a vampire named Kim, and other odd creatures. Occasionally they go outside. Walk about. Talk crud. Maybe run into a mummy or ghost detective, but whatever. Okay, so Ghost might get stoned all […]

Above All Else by Dana Alison Levy

December 22, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dana Alison Levy might be a lovely person; but as I do not know them personally, I cannot say one way or the other. However, I am sure I do not like her characters in Above All Else. In fact, I am disliking them so much, I just cannot finish this book. I am very glad I was able to get this in an e-reader format because even keeping my uncle (the logger) in a job would not ease my soul for taking the life […]

Whole new meaning to Under the Sea

Mera: Tidebreaker by Danielle Paige

May 8, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not decided why the cover of Mera: Tidebreaker turned me off to the book. In fact, the whole story turned me off. I have never been an Aquaman fan, so maybe that was why. Maybe I was afraid that Danielle Paige would make her too “Girl Power-She-Woman-Man-Hater.” Maybe I was just really envious of her red hair. Regardless of my misgivings, when I finally found a copy of this graphic novel, I was willing to give it a shot. And I am glad […]
