June 12, 2025 by Tracy Leave a Comment

What an incredible book. I knew from reading If Beale Street Could Talk that James Baldwin was a good writer, but it is rare for me to appreciate a book on just a literary level. The prose, the symbolism, the way it’s so clear what the narrator is experiencing even though he himself is hiding from his feelings—it was phenomenal. Written in the 1950s and set in Paris, the novel follows narrator David through his relationship with Giovanni and the aftermath of its ending. We know from […]

The Burnt Toast B&B (Bluewater Bay Book 5) by Heidi Belleau and Rachel Haimowitz

October 5, 2024 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

CBR16 Bingo: Vintage Derrick is a screw up, or at least he thinks he is. Laid off from his logging job, he moved back home to his parents’ house, which is also a B&B in the small Pacific Northwest town of Bluewater Bay. Losing his parents in a car accident was devastating, and watching their dreams crumble beneath his incompetent fingers is too much to bear. Derrick barely maintains the B&B and relies heavily on Jim, his ex, for emotional support and occasional dog sitting […]

But here is Andy, laying himself bare, and Nick isn’t sure he’s ever seen anything so brave in his life. This is a man who plays it safe, a man who orders the same sandwich every day for lunch. And now he’s taking a risk, and he’s taking it for Nick. ― Cat Sebastian, We Could Be So Good “I’m not wasting time on things that make me sad.” He learned that lesson with Old Yeller, thank you very much. “Andy, you publish a newspaper. I am the tree and you are the bird. Fly off as you please, you will always come back to sit on my branches.

A Long Way from Douala by Max Lobe

Pa had brought out our entire stock of beer. Simon, Roger and I had the job of serving. We ran to and fro between the kitchen, the living room and the porch. Our hi-fi pumped out old Makossa hits: our parents’ favorites. A few women neighbors of their generation, also wearing kaba ngondos, had begun shimmying in the empty space at the center of the room. They looked like they were showing off: you can’t dance the Makossa without showing off.” ― Max Lobe, A […]
