Inspiring Quotes from Children's Classics: For Growing Up by Hannah Barnaby

April 25, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While there are mostly uplifting and positive quotations fill Inspiring Quotes from Children’s Classics: For Growing Up, there are one or two silly or maybe a bit not so “uplifting” ones that will make you chuckle. From classic quotes (Moby Dick) to contemporary reads (Princess Academy), there is a little bit of everything included. Therefore you can find Moomins and Christopher Paolini next to CS Lewis and Ramona the Pest. Sometimes, the phrase is not necessarily something I would consider “inspirational” or even has a […]

Dear Moon: Inspiration from the Beautiful Wisdom of the Qur'an by Zayneb Haleem

November 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dear Moon: Inspiration from the Beautiful Wisdom of the Qur’an by Zayneb Haleem knocked my socks off! It is one of the most beautifully created books I have seen this year. I cannot stop saying the word Beautiful to describe it.  It is a beautiful book of inspiration that is breathtaking. It is beautifully poetic. You might not be Muslim, but the messages are for everyone. It was not until college that I realized how the religious text and/or meanings were so similar when it […]

The Comfort Book by Matt Haig

October 31, 2023 by cheerbrarian 2 Comments

CBR Bingo – Europe In the wake of a surprising lay off I was looking for something to lift my spirits and came across this little tome, from the English author of “The Midnight Library.” That book was an examination of a squandered life as Nora has decided she has nothing left to live for. After taking the matter into her own hands, instead of finding herself faced with nothingness, she finds herself in the titular Midnight Library which is filled with volumes of books […]

I guess this is a children’s book?

January 20, 2018 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

In 1998 a snopes.com reader coined the term glurge, and I’ve been forever grateful. What is glurge? Snopes has this to say, “Think of it as chicken soup with several cups of sugar mixed in: It’s supposed to be a method of delivering a remedy for what ails you by adding sweetening to make the cure more appealing, but the result is more often a sickly-sweet concoction that induces hyperglycemic fits.” The website tvtropes.org claims the term derives from the sound of someone throwing up. […]

I Really Wanted to Punch Her Parents… A Lot

July 8, 2016 by Andrea Krieter 1 Comment

The Glass Castle Rating: 3/5 Summary: This is the memoir of Jeannette Walls and her dysfunctional family. She has a very unorthodox childhood, which some may call negligence or even abuse on her parent’s part. It’s the story of how one can lose faith in people after so many defeats. But it’s also the story of how perseverance and determination can get you out of a tough situation. So many things happened in this book, it’s tough to nail down exactly what to say. It’s […]

Not All Who Wander Are Lost

February 8, 2016 by expandingbookshelf Leave a Comment

I love to travel. Well, I love to daydream about travelling while staying solidly in my own little corner of the earth. I always have an explanation why-it’s too expensive, I can’t take the time off, I need to brush up on the language, I don’t know if it’s safe to go alone, I don’t know if I like anyone enough to travel with them…the list goes on and on. It’s not that I’m (consciously) looking for excuses. It’s that we’ve all been conditioned to […]
