Ringing in the New Year with Inspector Gamache <3

Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny

January 2, 2019 by kella 4 Comments

Well, CBR10 was an epic disaster for me (I think I reviewed one book? maybe?), but we’re going to give ‘er another go this year. And what better way to kick things off than with the latest instalment in the Inspector Gamache series. There are very few books that I pre-order and am willing to pay full price for the hardcover immediate release. This series is one of those exceptions. This is the 14th book to date, and I can’t stress enough that you should […]

“There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.” (CBR10 Bingo)

August 26, 2018 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

In order to pace myself I read the Inspector Gamache books in the season or month they are set and it has been eight long months since I last visited the greater environs of Three Pines. Book nine, How the Light Gets In, had a feeling of finality to it, of bringing together the various storylines and setting a new normal for our characters. I was unsure what I should expect when it finally came time to read The Long Way Home, what would life […]

Everything is Worth it, After All

August 25, 2018 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

Louise Penny has been taking me on quite the rollercoaster with these last few books, but How the Light Gets In feels like my favorite part of the ride: the end. I know there are still several books left in the Inspector Gamache series but I think it may be awhile until I come back to them, because this one made me feel completely satisfied with everyone’s trajectory. How the Light Gets In tells two stories: Inspector Gamache is solving the murder of an elderly […]

A Step Back

August 12, 2018 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

Whoo, this book was a struggle. There have been other books in the Gamache series that I didn’t particularly love, but I barely finished this one. It felt like a chore. A Beautiful Mystery has Inspector Gamache and his right-hand man, Inspector Beauvoir, investigating a murder of a monk at an extremely secluded monastery. I know I complained about a previous book in the series having too much going on (the one where he’s investigating the murder of an archaeologist), but this one had the […]

A Return to Form

July 14, 2018 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

Throughout 2016 and 2017, I read the Inspector Gamache series as fast as I could (which wasn’t very fast. . .there’s a 2-3 month wait at my library for electronic versions of most of them). But when I got to book 6, Bury Your Dead, I stopped. I didn’t enjoy that one at all, and it was another 10 months before I felt like returning to the series with A Trick of the Light (well, 8 months, plus then waiting another 2 before I could […]

A new A plot, and some big progress in the B plot

February 28, 2018 by Bothari43 3 Comments

This is book three in the Inspector Gamache series, and I am pleasantly surprised and intrigued. I was worried that this would be yet another mystery series that follows checklists every book, like how Eve Dallas always has a consult with Dr. Mira and doesn’t like tea, and Stephanie Plum whines about borrowing Uncle Sandor’s Buick, blah blah blah. We get it, you’ve done that every book for 287 books. While there have been some repeats in the quaint, seemingly-frozen, deadly village of Three Pines […]
