I won’t bite, unless you ask really nice, but these insects might!

Please Don't Bite Me! : Insects that Buzz, Bite and Sting by Nazzy Pakpour

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Please Don’t Bite Me! : Insects that Buzz, Bite and Sting is actually more of a 3.5  than four rating as there are a few illustrations that were somewhat abstract. The first one was the mosquito being shown biting  a victim. The body, head, and everything else did not look real, therefore, it all blended together. The text, on the other hand, is good. Straight forward, covering a few pages for each insect and covers several pieces of the puzzle of that particular insect. And […]

Sora Searches for a Song: Little Cricket’s Imagination Journey (Dance-It-Out! Creative Movement Stories) by A Dance, Once Upon

May 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have not yet listened to the audio version of Sora Searches for a Song: Little Cricket’s Imagination Journey (Dance-It-Out! Creative Movement Stories) but I am hoping soon. In the meantime, I was able to find an online reader copy. We follow Ballerina Konora as she shows us how to do dance moves. Or how to dance-out the story itself. You can read the story first, so you know the basics, but to the side Konora is stretching, turning, jumping, moving along. Christine Herbert and […]

What a marvelous place to explore

Bompa’s Insect Expedition (David Suzuki Institute) by David Suzuki

April 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR15Passport country I had never heard of anyone calling their grandfather Bompa. Or at least not since I did it with one grandfather (though I went to calling them both grandpa after a spell). That might be the reason I wanted to read Bompa’s Insect Expedition (David Suzuki Institute). And probably why I liked it. Though it is a fun book, too. The grandfather in the story takes his grandchildren out and about on adventures and this book covers the different goodies nature has. But […]

Wondering

Where Do Butterflies Go at Night? by Jeanne Balsam

July 1, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Where Do Butterflies Go at Night? Find out in this picture book by Jeanne Balsam. You will see how the young narrator makes wonderfully silly, fun, and even serious guesses about what happens to the butterflies when it is time for the day to sleep. Wonderfully poetic, simple, but detailed, the story unfolds with the magical and imaginative illustrations of Stella Mongodi. These amazingly rich, deeply colored and a mix of light and dark, shadows and glow, and hidden gems flesh out the story.  They […]

I might pick on the frogs in this review but there is an elephant too

It's Tough to Be Tiny by Kim Woolcock

June 28, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What if I told you that being small was not as bad as it might seem? In fact, it can be cool. Oh sure, we vertically challenged people might not be able to reach the average height shelf in the store and have to smile nicely to the tall gentleman for assistance, but if you were some of the animals in It’s Tough to Be Tiny you would be the cat’s meow, bees’ knees and frog of the bog! Kim Woolcock writes about the tiny […]

Burt doesn’t bite (unless, you know, you ask nicely)

Burt the Beetle Doesn’t Bite! by Ashley Spires

August 20, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Burt the Beetle Doesn’t Bite! is a cute “first read” about beetles and insects. Ashley Spires created a simple, but also includes information, fiction story. The fiction/story aspect allows it to not be an “all-encompassing fact filled book” that bogs you down. It just tells you a story as they introduce the different creatures in the book. The story is about the talents the characters have, that we all have, that might not seem great at first, but there is a place for them at […]
