With a Vroom! Vroom! everywhere

Vroom! by Barbara McClintock

July 30, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A busy, young girl takes a trip around the countryside (and beyond) one night in this Barbara McClintock creation, Vroom! The detailed illustrations show you where she is going and where she has been (usually in the rearview/sideview mirrors of her race car). She has long and smooth roads until she gets to the mountains, where the cold lends itself to the warmth of the desert, then off to the forest and finally a bridge that takes her to a large, busy and traffic filled […]

My mom was a Barbie Doctor

My Mama is a Mechanic by Doug Cenko

June 21, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Mama is a Mechanic is a “Women can be and do whatever they want” book for the toddler crowd. And sometimes they are those things because of a little help from the imagination of a child. The mom in this book wears many hats: surgeon, chemist and mechanic to name a few. What is going on is the Kid and their imagination see real-life situations and when these things are happening (she is a chemist because she cooks; a surgeon to only the highest […]

Do you believe that Pirates don’t takes baths and there are Groovicorns?

Pirates Don’t Take Baths by John Sega

Do You Believe in Groovicorns? by Rosie Greening

May 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Yesterday was a slow day at work. Therefore, I took a few minutes to look at the new crop of Sale Books that came in. (Long story short, they are just lovely normal books looking for a home, but just have a slightly lower price than usual). Two books that caught my attention were two board books. One, Pirates Don’t Take Baths by John Segal and the other, I actively went looking for as I had been the one to do the data entry on […]

The Berenstain Bears Pirate Adventure by Mike Berenstain

May 2, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Berenstain Bears Pirate Adventure  by Mike Berenstain is a solid example of a Berenstain Bears book. And since it is from 2016, it is also an example of one of the more modern Bears with Baby Honey in it. She is now old enough to run around and play with her older siblings, Brother and Sister Bear. And what they play is Pirates!  However, the one part of the story that is not as traditional is the fact their Christian values or moral story is […]

Obviously when pigs fly…..

October 25, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The saving grace for The Dreamer is at the very end. I liked the “full circle” of the pig “admiring the birds” at the start and finish. The in-between is what I am not crazy about. The theme of “keep trying” and “making mistakes” has been done. Many times. The only difference here is that the friends and neighbors of the pig help him. Usually the “keep trying” is seen as a solo act. And the pig listens to the other animals. That seemed like […]

Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse or does he?

September 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse by Marcy Campbell has some interesting elements. It is a softer version (text and illustration wise) of Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. Chloe, the narrator of our story knows that Adrian cannot have a horse. Why? Because he cannot have a horse in town. Or in his small house. Or the fact it takes a lot of money to take care of a horse and he has raggedy clothing. It is not until her mother gives her a […]
