Appalachian Fantasy

June 23, 2016 by melanir Leave a Comment

On the Edge is a light, fluffy urban fantasy (rural fantasy?) from an author pair whose books rarely let me down (even if they hit a few of my red button issues). I’ve been struggling with insomnia the past few nights and this book really helped alleviate the midnight boredom when you can’t fall asleep but don’t want to get out of bed just in case you do fall asleep. Urban Fantasy is my comfort zone. Urban Fantasy that has shape-shifters is my crack, Ilona […]

Insert Clever Broom Metaphor Here

June 8, 2016 by melanir 2 Comments

Immediately after finishing Clean Sweep, I started on this one and devoured it whole. I adore everything about this book. And what’s really awesome is that it looks like the series is adding alternate dimensions into its ‘science’ so they can add characters from their other books. (Which is what happens in this one, but they’re from a series I haven’t read yet, so I found out by reading the Goodreads reviews). It’s completely ridiculous ‘science’ and I love it. In this one, Dina is […]

Urban Fantasy with Delusions of Science Fiction. I LOVE IT

June 7, 2016 by melanir 2 Comments

Clean Sweep is the start of a new Urban Fantasy series by Illona Andrews, the husband and wife writing team responsible another series that places pretty highly on my favorites list. This one definitely tops that one, and I look forward to many more books to come. Dina Demille is an Innkeeper, which sounds exactly like what it is. Except the clientele she draws from is  a lot more intergalactic in scope. And the Inn itself has more in common with the T.A.R.D.I.S. then an earth hotel. Well, […]

Unnecessary “I liked this” headline

May 18, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

As a reviewer, I get to a point with authors I love — and as much as I hate to segregate out certain authors, this is especially pronounced with genre authors who proudly inhabit a particular niche — where I can’t really go too deeply into what I love about their books without feeling like I am repeating myself. I talk about how and why they excel at characterization, the themes that they tend to explore really well, their excellent scene-setting, reliable pacing, and effective […]

And the medal for consistency goes to Ilona Andrews

April 5, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 4 Comments

4.5 stars In the UF/PNR realm, I can’t think of a more reliable author team than Ilona Andrews. They consistently tell witty, exciting, and inventive stories that also manage to keep my crabby inner feminist satisfied by their refreshing lack of misogyny and even casual sexism. They manage this with their (seemingly, through it shouldn’t be) astonishing ability to create female protagonists and side characters who are complex, compelling, and above all, distinguishable from each other. Just like real people! I am pretty sure I […]

Officially Tossed From the Fan Club

December 27, 2015 by Alexis Leave a Comment

Sweep in Peace is the second installment of the Innkeeper Chronicles, a series from the beloved writing pair known as Ilona Andrews. Dina is an innkeeper living with and caring for her Inn (the semi-sentient Gertrude Hunt) in rural Texas, as three diverse groups of magical warrior species converge on the Inn to host a deadly peace negotiation. The story is a unique blend of urban fantasy, magic, and science fiction with all the elements fans of Ilona Andrews have come to expect: unique world-building, […]
