Ebenezer Tweezer is 511 years old, but you’d never know it to look at him. He lives in a great big house, surrounded by exciting treasures and artifacts and all of this is possible because of the hideous beast he keep in his attic. In return for Ebenezer feading it interesting things, the Beast gives him potions once a year that keep Ebenezer young and beautiful. It’s also given him all the special things in his house. Ladies loving ladies and sucking blood in 1872.

Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu

May 26, 2022 by narfna 3 Comments

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 11/30 This sure was something, I tell you what. Before I get to the actual review, I do want to say that I am specifically referring to the version edited by Carmen Maria Machado, with an introduction and footnotes by her. Both things fundamentally changed the experience of reading this. I am still boggled in the mind that this is a book about lesbian vampires and their young female victims being seduced, and it was written in […]

Some of Tolkien’s lesser known works.

Smith of Wootton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham by J.R.R. Tolkien

January 31, 2022 by narfna 5 Comments

I have owned a copy of this book since before I was on Goodreads, and it’s been on my “TBR” even longer than that. (I no longer remember how I used to keep track of books I wanted to read before Goodreads.) It was also one of the first books I pulled out of my TBR Jar for 2022, and really, it was about time. And it was fun! A little weird, a little nonsensical (and whimsical), but fun. There are two short stories in […]

I would like to join the Tea Dragon Society

The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill

December 27, 2021 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

Dome’Loki introduced me to Kay O’Neill’s The Tea Dragon Society through her Cannonball Read review. The adorable cover won me over immediately. I was so taken with it that I impulsively supported the Chamomile plush Kickstarter campaign without ever reading the books. I couldn’t decide which dragon I wanted, so I simply ordered all of them with the first book. After several months, they finally arrived and made my day! This children’s book is the first in a series. It introduces us to Greta who […]

Sleep Donation by Karen Russell

December 12, 2021 by andtheIToldYouSos 4 Comments

In the near-future, we lucky Americans are eyeball-deep in a new terror: we can’t sleep. Every day, thousands more become unable to reach REM. They die after days of restlessness. The only thing that can help? Donations of sleep from “healthy” dreamers. Not unlike a blood drive, people like Trish Edgewater are cold-calling sleepers, begging them to give some of their life to the lifeless. Etiquette is a powerful programming, however, and easily exploitable. I sneeze. He sneezes back language at me, reflexive generosity: “Bless […]

Black Girl Scientific Joy

Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty

October 31, 2021 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

There are so many adorable kids’ books available these days. I often catch myself admiring the shelf and smiling when visiting the bookstore. I really love the concept behind the Questioneers series from Andrea Beaty. She does a great job spotlighting children from various cultures. Each book follows a child and their dream career, many of them in STEM. There are also accompanying activity books to introduce these careers and topics beyond the main book. Series Synopsis: The Questioneers series is a celebration of STEM, […]
