If It Bleeds? King sure does; the master is no longer impervious

If It Bleeds by Stephen King

Late last year, I thought to myself it’d been a while since I last read something by the author who once was my favorite: Stephen King. Since he’d just released a new novel, Billy Summers, one I’d seen some rather positive press for, I picked it up from Walmart, although with some trepidation. It had been some time since King had written anything that captured my attention the way my favorites of his have; I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve attempted to make […]

If It Bleeds by Stephen King

There’s something about reading Stephen King that really fuels my creativity. And this was a good collection. The real star of these four novellas is the titular If It Bleeds, a direct sequel to The Outsider, but I think I might have actually liked it better than that book. We get some classic themes from Uncle Stevie here but he adds a modern spin to most of them that was interesting, even if some worked better than others for me. Mr. Harrigan’s Phone — 3.5 […]

If It Bleeds by Stephen King

I haven’t been great about reading lately, and have been even worse about reviewing. But as a loyal Constant Reader, I felt like this might be the book to jumpstart my COVID reading habits, and I was mostly right. Similiar to earlier collections like Different Seasons, The Bachman Books, Full Dark No Stars, and Four Past Midnight, If It Bleeds is made up of four long-ish, unrelated stories (or novellas, if you’re feeling fancy): Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, The Life of Chuck, If It Bleeds, and […]

The Life of Chuck by Stephen King

Somehow I didn’t even know this was going to be a novellas collection, and I think after reading The Institute last week after waiting a few months to get to it, I am glad for this kind of book instead of another long novel. Mostly this is a solid collection that I don’t think actually works great for new readers. I think they should read his previous novel first. This collection will work for everyone on the Stephen King bi-annual plan, and that’s not a bad […]
