The Christmas Bookshop by Jenny Colgan

500 Miles From You by Jenny Colgan

The Bookshop on the Shore by Jenny Colgan

December 29, 2022 by scootsa1000 4 Comments

First. I have been the worst reviewer this year. I kept meaning to sit down and write, because I have read more books than ever this year, but life just kept getting in my way. As it does. And yet, here I am, in week two of a positive Covid test, and I’ve finished binging all the shows (SIDE NOTE: how had I slept on For All Mankind for so long?). No time like the present to get started. A few weeks ago, I saw […]

Non-Rebus Rankin

The Complaints by Ian Rankin

December 5, 2022 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I have a real soft spot for Ian Rankin’s John Rebus series- they were the first mystery series I read where it felt like the location was a character (and a real location I could visit). I still remember how keen I was on my first visit to Edinburgh to visit the places that Rankin described. While I still have a few Rebus novels to catch up on (they’re a little bleak, so not a diet for all seasons), I was excited to read a […]

Holiday Reads: Alsatian Edition

Mortal Causes (Inspector Rebus #6) by Ian Rankin

Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators by Ronan Farrow

Perfect Silence (DI Callanach #4) by Helen Fields

August 17, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Vacationing with young children is hard work, people, even if you’re on a campsite that has not one, but two trampolines (“mum, see what I can do!”). Nevertheless I managed to sneak in a couple of books as I hung about in the (beautiful and very hot) Alsatian countryside, so here goes.  Mortal Causes (Ian Rankin) *** Mortal Causes is Inspector Rebus book no. 6 and though I’ve read the previous five, I had to look that up. I also forgot what it was about […]

Elvis in Edinburgh

The Black Book by Ian Rankin

July 9, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Inspector John Rebus is having a tough time. His girlfriend, with whom he has recently moved in, has thrown him out, leaving him stranded in his own flat which is now full of students as well as his brother, who has recently been released from prison. To make matters worse, his underling is found in an alley behind an Elvis-themed eatery with a headwound and no idea how he got there. Rebus investigates but is soon thwarted both by his superiors and by a devious […]

Eat the Rich.

Strip Jack by Ian Rankin

May 30, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

On a balmy summer night in Edinburgh, the filth razes an illicit brothel in a well-to-do area. Johns and working girls alike are piled into the back of a police car to be given a fine and a stern talking to, with one exception. One of the men coming out of the building is MP Gregor Jack. He is well-liked by his constituents and respected by his peers, but the press are waiting outside and he is proverbially, if not literally, caught with his pants […]

A cool collaboration of thriller writers and characters

Face Off by David Baldacci

April 26, 2022 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

This is the second collaboration audiobook I’ve borrowed and read from my library.  I got into it because of my buddy Michael Connelly.  If you read my previous review that I just posted, you’ll know that maybe he’s not my buddy after all, but Harry Bosch is.  Conveniently, Harry is in this book! The wording on Goodreads calls this “an unprecedented collaboration”, which sounds very grand.  I didn’t really get it until I looked at all the authors involved and listened to the intro.  Apparently […]
