Foe: a domestic science fiction thriller

Foe by Iain Reid

January 11, 2024 by donttrustthe_bea 2 Comments

mood music: big jet plane – Angus and Julia Stone This was my second read of 2024, again I picked up this book becuase it’s been adapted into a film starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. It was much better than my first read of the year, Eileen, although I was left with questions once I was done with it. Foe follows Junior and Hen, a married couple living on an isolated farm in the near future (the film has the story set in 2065). Modern […]

If Get Out and Midsommer Had a Book Baby

I’m Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

June 6, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

On its surface, this novel is about an unnamed twenty or thirty something narrator traveling with her boyfriend, Jake, to his parents’ remote family farm for a first ‘meet the parents’ dinner. As the two are driving there, our protagonist begins to have doubts about the relationship (“I’m thinking of ending things”) but ultimately decides she can’t say anything until they’re back home in the city. Once they arrive at Jake’s parents, everything starts to shift in vaguely unsettling ways- dead animals frozen and stacked […]

Journey To Hell

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

August 10, 2020 by Jake Leave a Comment

This is one of those books where the less said, the better. I’d recommend not even reading the premise, not because of spoilers but because it will allow you to make the journey easier. It’s a horror tale but it’s not your typical guts-and-gore horror tale. It’s psychological but in a way you’re probably not expecting. It’s literary, but not too haughty. It’s philosophical, at times pretentiously so but it mostly leans on to the story it’s telling. It’s really important here to pay attention […]

CBR11Bingo: Illustrated (Lore) and 3 other books I didn’t particularly like

The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures by Aaron Mahnke

I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid

Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett

Heads Will Roll by Kate McKinnon, Emily Lynne

August 14, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I’ve lumped these four together because I didn’t really like any of them (as much as that pains me, Kate McKinnon, because I do love YOU) and it’s so hard to write reviews on meh books. So I’m going to bust these out, then move onto some books I really liked. The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures (The World of Lore #1) by Aaron Mahnke — my “Illustrated” Square This book was SO highly rated on Goodreads, and I really did not like it, but I’m not […]

If this book had a face, I would punch it

Foe by Iain Reid

June 23, 2019 by Claire Badger Leave a Comment

I have got to stop believing the hype around anyone declared Canada’s next big author. I just have to stop doing that for like, my mental health. CanLit is so desperate to have a big thing like Atwood again that they will throw that title around like a stick for a dog, and I, ever the faithful hound, will chase after it. But it’s a stick, not a rabbit, and a stick is ultimately wooden, predictable and boring; like this fucking book. Where do I […]
