Do you think I read a lot?

Clara the Triumphant Rhinoceros: A True Story by Jane Kurtz

Woody's Words : Woodrow Wilson Rawls and Where the Red Fern Grows by Lisa Rogers

Woods & Words: The Story of Poet Mary Oliver. by Sara Holly Ackerman

May 16, 2025 by BlackRaven 1 Comment

Biographies are a fun genre.  You can find out fun facts about favorite authors, poets or even rhinoceroses. Yes, rhinoceroses can have a biography, too. After all, it is hard for them to hold a pencil in their hoof for them to write an autobiography. Therefore, I will start off with Clara the Triumphant Rhinoceros: A True Story (in case you doubt me that this is a biography of a rhino, there is “true story” in the title). Jane Kurtz created a story that gives […]

I have the power of the Dog Knight

The Dog Knight by Jeremy Whitley

June 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Once upon a time I heard of a book called The Dog Knight by Jeremy Whitley. At first I did not realize it was to be the first book in a series, but later I saw Volume one after the words The Dog Knight. And I should have realized that it was a series as it ends on an open but also “end of this chapter of the story” note. The author is that of the graphic novel series School for Extraterrestrial Girls. I was […]

My sister the elephant

The Secret Elephant : Inspired By a True Story of Friendship by Ellan Rankin

April 5, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You have heard of Winnie The Pooh and Wojtek the Bear from Brothers In Arms but did you know about the elephant named Sheila? (Or Violet? As I’m finding conflicting accounts, yet I’m going with Sheila as that is what is in The Secret Elephant : Inspired By a True Story of Friendship by Ellan Rankin.) Despite the name difference, the story is one of heroism at another level. And maybe a little silliness. Our young elephant is by themselves, except for their zookeeper. The […]

The Wild Ones

Snow Foal by Susanna Bailey

March 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I would have enjoyed Susanna Bailey’s Snow Foal a lot when I was about ages 10 to 14. I would have liked the free spirit of the main character, how she struggles to be independent, how she needs to go home, and how she learns home can be where the heart is, even if it does not always include all the people you love. As an adult, I still appreciated most things, but sometimes Addie’s attitude left  little something to be desired. The other characters […]
