I feel the need…the need for speed!

December 4, 2015 by Halbs 2 Comments

Full disclosure: I was drinking one night and accidentally signed up for Kindle Unlimited. My motor skills and reading comprehension were such that I tapped on a wrong button and ended up with a service that I didn’t intend to purchase. However, I went down the KU rabbithole with glee. My first book rental was a Wonder Woman history that I previously reviewed. My second and third downloads, records show, were books on speed reading. One of the books that I downloaded was garbage. It […]

If You’re Looking to Reinforce Heteronormative Values, Have I Got A Book for You!

October 3, 2015 by ASKReviews 2 Comments

When I searched on Amazon to provide a link, I learned that this book was updated in 2015; whereas the version I read was published nine years ago. So I’m going to *hope* that the updated version is better than this one. It’d be pretty challenging for it to be worse. This is a pretty sexist book. I think the author has this idea that teaching etiquette is the same thing as teaching women how to fit into every stereotype about what a woman should […]

Apparently, the world will be rebuilt with chemistry. Alas for toilets!

A few months back, Lollygagger posted a review of Lewis Dartnell’s The Knowledge, which was described as a sort of real-life companion to Station Eleven. Since my fall Composition I course will be focusing on dystopia, I thought a real-life how-to guide might be a great thing to read. And it certainly was interesting. While Dartnell does not tell you how to skin a deer or make an igloo, he does talk about some of the building blocks of society that we will need to […]

To Keep or Not to Keep

March 11, 2015 by ASKReviews 15 Comments

I heard about the “KonMari Method” from a quick blurb in New York Magazine a few weeks back. Seeing as how I love to be tidy and clean, as well as the fact that I’m feeling a bit weighed down from all of our stuff, I ordered the book and started reading it on Sunday. I nearly finished it in one go, I enjoyed it so much. First off, I must admit that this problem of having too much stuff is admittedly not a luxury […]

I Wish I Owned a Home

I found this book at this local store called Watson Kennedy, which is the kind of store I could easily spend hours in. It’s the kind of place where everything costs just a little more than it probably should, and where items are organized by color instead of type. It’s the kind of place that sells several kinds of olive oils as well as antique etiquette books. Anyway, the reason I share this is because it’s also the kind of store that leads people to […]

“Strip every sentence to its cleanest components.”

I love participating in Cannonball Read for a few reasons. I didn’t know AlabamaPink, but I followed her on Pajiba and am happy to support fundraising in her name. I love that CBR motivates me to pick up a book instead of a video game or magazine, and I know I wouldn’t have read nearly as many (mostly good) books in the last 18 months without it. But one benefit I didn’t fully understand until recently is that CBR gives me the chance to improve […]
