Confidence With Some Product Placement And Gender Norming

August 6, 2017 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: People who like Amber Rose; people who like glossy how-to book with lots of pictures and not a lot of text. In a nutshell: Amber Rose offers some (I suppose not totally shockingly) heteronormative advice to woman. Line that sticks with me: “Don’t follow trends if they don’t look good on you.” [Note: but why not? What if you like the way they look? Does she mean if *you* don’t’ think they look good, or if society doesn’t?] Why I chose it: It […]

A tale of plotters for pantsers.

July 28, 2017 by tillie 1 Comment

In writing there’s two types: the plotters and the pantsers. The plotters decide and document the entire plot before writing. The pantsers start writing and hope that a plot sorta happens along the way. Spoiler alert: Plots don’t usually happen that way. Also spoiler: I’m a totalt pantser. So in an effort to learn how to be a plotter I’ve been picking up some books. This is the first one I’ve finished. The writer’s journey is based on the idea that all stories are basically […]

Oh crap! You’re a condescending jerk.

I was going to wait until I’d actually potty trained my kid to review this, but 1) I need to clear my backlog of reviews, 2) I’m probably not going to get around to potty training in the next two weeks, and 3) my kid has some special needs that may make potty training harder, so even if Glowacki’s method doesn’t work for us it’s not necessarily an indictment of her method. So here we go. Basically the author runs some kind of potty […]

Like the Young House Love blog? Try the Young House Love book!

August 21, 2016 by Blingle Bells Leave a Comment

It’s really amazing and surprisingly to me that DIY home bloggers can be so divisive, yet Sherry and John Petersik of Young House Love definitely are. I started reading their blog a few years ago, and it kind of provided the soil for my dormant love of home decor and DIY to finally blossom into a huge, cumbersome, expensive flower. About a year ago, I became aware that there was some kind of malcontent rumbling in the comments section, which was closely linked to a […]

A photo a day keeps a rut away.

I honestly have no idea why I got this book from the library, but I’m really glad I did! I think I must’ve put it on my to-read list a couple years ago, and once I finally got it, it languished in my library pile for ages. I’ve been taking pictures since I could pick up a camera – my mom, grandfather, and godfather are/were truly incredible photographers. I’ve been featured in two art galleries (#humblebrag) I have a little side business doing family […]

Eh. Fine.

August 7, 2016 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Remember last year, when everyone you know – and everyone they know – was reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up? I was one of those people. My husband and I really pared down out belongings at a serendipitous time; not a month later we received notice that we had to move, so it was much easier to pack our two-bedroom apartment up with 11 days’ notice after having taken over two carloads of belongings to Goodwill. We continue to tidy following this method, for […]
