For the night is dark and full of shadows

August 12, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is volume 3 in an ongoing story arc and really won’t make much sense to anyone beginning the series here. Start at the beginning with Vol 1: Welcome to Lovecraft. The three half-orphaned Locke children, Tyler, Kinsey and Bode, have already gone through so much horror and heartbreak, and it doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon. Their mother is becoming less dependable, as she’s gradually descending further into alcoholism and madness, aggravated by the evil spirit haunting their lives. Kinsey is […]

Don’t Answer

August 11, 2016 by DataAngel 2 Comments

Woah.  I’m way behind in my reviews. This is number six, and the book is a real number two. Nathan Gallagher doesn’t believe in ghosts. As a fireman, he’s seen his share of dead people, but they never spoke to him before—until now. His marriage is great, and his relationship with his son is strong, but Nathan is sure that if he tells his family that he’s seeing ghosts, it is a quick ticket to a padded room and a straightjacket. Sounds good, right? I’m thinking […]

For me, this book was just okay, which isn’t okay!!!

August 10, 2016 by narfna 4 Comments

I don’t know, guys, this book just wasn’t for me. I don’t understand why the universe is doing this to me! It’s getting such good reviews, like glowing reviews, and really the sum total of my feelings can be described with a single syllable. (It’s “meh,” if you’re curious.) And it had such promise! Who doesn’t want to read about a mysterious fungus that makes people develop pretty black designs on their bodies that look like dragon scales, and then burst into flames? And a […]

“Your pitiful souls mean nothing to me.” – Stephen King (probably)

July 11, 2016 by ingres77 2 Comments

I had nothing to go on before reading this apart from my cursory knowledge of the movie and that Stephen King wrote this novel in a drunken stupor which he barely remembers. Which is to say, I held little hope for a story about a rabid dog that traps a mother and son in their car. Despite the fact that this book seriously ruined the ability for anyone to call their dog Cujo, I don’t really consider it a horror novel. This is the story […]

I Promise I Tried With This One

July 7, 2016 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Sometimes, a book shows up and you read it knowing full well it isn’t for you. This, friends, is one of those books. I’m participating in Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge again this year since I’m usually looking for an excuse to read something different and I have been trying to expand my tastes. One of the challenges, number one in fact, is to read a horror book. Fear was struck into my heart because I don’t even watch horror movies, let alone read horror […]

More Supernatural Than I’d Like

July 6, 2016 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

As I’ve mentioned before, I didn’t read Stephen King’s work until this year, and I lucked out in starting with Mr. Mercedes, which was book one in this trilogy. End of Watch is the final book, and explores more supernatural themes than the previous two. If you’ve read the first two: so Retired Detective Hodges is not feeling good, and we find out that has pancreatic cancer. Not a great diagnosis. He and his partner Holly are still running their private investigation business, and Jerome […]
