Stories about love and death. No songs, really. The title’s a bit misleading.

May 4, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

Overall rating: 3.5 stars This is an anthology, where all the stories are focused around love and death. I know, extremely surprising, based on the title. I will write a tiny bit about each of the stories, and conclude with my general impression of the anthology as a whole. It’s a really long post, what with me writing about 17 different stories. If you’re interested in my write-up, the review is here.

Bollocks

April 17, 2014 by Robyn Robotron Leave a Comment

I have this theory about Keanu Reeves.  The less his character knows about what’s going on, the better the movie.  My favorite movies of his are Bill and Ted, I Love You to Death, Parenthood and The Matrix.  My theory really holds up with the Matrix trilogy; the first one was awesome, the last two, not so much.  Why would someone cast a man who can only play someone who knows nothing as a man who knows too much?  Let’s not even get into his […]

A monster awakens

April 15, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Eighteenth book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. There’s something regal and respectable about Lovecraftian horror. It is not gut-wrenching, disgustingly gory or even scary in the right sense of the word. It does not do what a horror story is expected to do. What it does, and exceedingly well, is to fill you with a feeling of dread and leave you uneasy as you try to comprehend the nature of beings that he has described in his story. Lovecraft doesn’t write about Earthly […]

Dr. Frankenstein’s no good very bad life

April 14, 2014 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This one was on my “classics” bookshelf and I felt the need to be a little literary.  As an honor’s English student in high school and an English major in college, I am no stranger to Shelley’s story but wanted to dust it off and give it another look.  I figured it would be interesting to compare how far modern adaptations have strayed from the original, and I was not disappointed though I would maybe like to push Dr. Frankenstein down a flight of stairs. […]

There’s a monster in the woods that tears people’s hearts out

April 12, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

Rowan Rose lives in the little village of Nag’s End with her father. Like her father, an experienced scholar, Rowan enjoys assisting him with translations and is proud of her achievements. Five soldiers ride through the village on their way up the mountain, and some days later, are found horribly killed by the men of the village. In a journal left by one of the soldiers are the words: “It’s starting.”. The elders of Nag’s End declare the deaths the result of an animal attack, but not […]

No No NOS4A2

March 31, 2014 by DataAngel 2 Comments

A few weeks ago I made a post on Facebook asking for recommendations for really scary books. I wanted to be scared. I wanted that uncomfortable, creeped-out feeling. I wanted to have trouble sleeping because my mind wouldn’t let go of something I read. Several people recommended NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. I checked out the book. I noticed it had a lot of high star ratings on Amazon and Goodreads. I figured I’d give it a shot. I seldom regret spending money on books, but […]
