All the Stars in the Heavens, by Adriana Trigiani

Bad Impulses

July 17, 2017 by Gracey the Giant Leave a Comment

Although I have a “To Read” list on Goodreads and have books and authors scribbled down on the backs of various envelopes and whatnot, I am also a pretty impulsive reader. Especially at my favorite local used book store.  It’s a wonderful place where they give you credit for any books you bring in and also offer a 50% discount when you use that trade credit.  When I’m there, I completely ignore my scribbles and my “To Read” list and just buy books on impulse. […]

I think she got her subtitle wrong

June 15, 2017 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

I read a decent amount of non-fiction in my life, so our June Book Club book, Life Moves Pretty Fast: The Lessons We Learned from Eighties Movies was right up my alley. I also really enjoy the process, the lore, and the production decisions surrounding Hollywood and the film industry, which is why I decided to skew our non-fiction selections a certain way. You all decided 80s was the way to go and here we are. I liked this book fine, but I think Hadley Freeman (while […]

A kookie little romance

April 30, 2017 by ingres77 12 Comments

This was a selection for the May nonfiction book club, and it lost. I’m so disappointed, you guys. But, I will persevere. Wasson recounts the history behind both Truman Capote’s 1958 novel, and the 1961 film directed by Blake Edwards and starring the inimitable and unconquerable Audrey Hepburn. Overall, this is a pretty good snapshot of Truman Capote, Audrey Hepburn, the film industry of the late 50s and early 60s, and the shifting beauty standards of the era. All of which amounts to a pretty […]

April 12, 2017 by faintingviolet 11 Comments

Voting for this Book Club is Closed. Come see what we chose on our Announcement Post, and join us on June 14. It is time once again friends to decide what book we want to tackle as a group. Following a great discussion, if not great reading, for our Fantasy pick, it’s time to head in a new direction, west you might say – and fall into some Non-fiction about the history of Hollywood. Below you will find our four choices, which cover different times […]

When you didn’t hate the book, but can’t think of the title: a meh-ish review.

December 6, 2016 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This was the last book of the book club I started in my local area. Aaaaand I read it over a month ago, so my memory is fuzzy, so this review isn’t going to be one for the record books. The book was recommended to me by a few folks, plus it was set it Italy, where I had just returned from a trip, so it seemed like a no brainer to tackle it next. All in all, I found it serviceable, but I just […]
