The Spooky Express series is coming to town

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Spooky Express: Vermont by Eric James and Marcin Piwowarski is an introduction to the state (in this one Vermont) and the monsters of Halloween. The kids hop on the train like The Polar Express and off they go. It is meant for the younger crowd, due to the innocence of the text of James and illustrations of Piwowarski. Each book in the series is in the rhyming text and format of The Night Before Christmas rhyme.   The overall look and idea of the […]

It is Christmastime!

July 5, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If The Polar Express, The Nutcracker and every Christmas story where the child wishes for ‘the best Christmas ever” made a book-baby, The Broken Ornament would be it. Jack wants this to be the best Christmas ever. Bigger is better! More is better! A bigger tree! More lights! More cookies! More presents! And more ornaments! But when Jack finds one last, old dusty ornament (that his mother tells him not to put on the tree) is broken, Jack is not sure why his mother is […]

Dad One and Dad Two

May 4, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is not “ha-ha funny” but “odd funny” how our mood and relationship with a subject bias how we feel about a book. I was reading two Father’s Day books and was thinking, “This is ICK!” (They are Pet Dad by Elanna Allen and Shopping with Dad by Matt Harvey and Miriam Latimer). After finishing, I took a step back and started to rethink my opinion: Okay, I can see why someone could like them. Yet, they are not my kind of like. My mood […]

Valensteins Gettin’ Some Lovin’

February 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Even monsters need some lovin’ in Valensteins by Ethan Long.  Part of mostly stand-alone titles, the members of Fright Club do not understand the concept of love. After all who wants to be mushy and all that? However, one member has a different idea about love. This a straight forward story about how sometimes friends do not always do what the others do. But when something is worthwhile, you will do it regardless what others think. The story itself is funny and simple. Of course, […]

Superfun Times, Vegan Style

December 27, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I like cookbooks, and I particularly like those by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. So naturally, I picked up her latest, The Superfun Times Vegan Holiday Cookbook. I am not vegan, but I lean in that direction, and I like cookbooks that A) don’t preach, and B) don’t use a lot of obscure ingredients or equipment. So far, I have read through the whole book, and worked my way through the Thanksgiving and Christmas recipes. The recipes themselves are up to Isa Chandra’s usual standard of yummy, […]
