To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.

May 22, 2017 by tillie 4 Comments

I will not review this as a book. This is not a book. It may be published as a book. It has a title, an author. A cover with neat little blurbs on the back from Oprah Winfrey, from the New York Times. WINNER OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE written on the front. All of it seems garish compared to what is inside. This is a witness. “To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.” Wiesel describes his life before […]

War, what is it good for?

I thoroughly enjoyed this, the third volume of Peter Ackroyd’s History of England, which covers a period of our history that I knew virtually nothing about (I don’t think I can really count Horrible Histories’ Charles II song as ‘knowledge’), from the succession of James I following the death of the childless Elizabeth I through to the flight of James II, taking in the civil war and the unprecedented execution of a king that happened in between. Here’s what I learned… James I of England, […]

Make Good Trouble

The March Trilogy, winner of the 2016 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, is a first-hand account of the civil rights movement in the United States as told by one of its leaders, Congressman John Lewis of Georgia. These graphic novels span the years 1960-65 and are presented as John Lewis’ recollections on January 20, 2009 — the day of President Obama’s first inauguration. This is an amazing memoir that is not only accessible to young readers, but would most likely be an eye-opener […]

The Kind of Stuff They Don’t Teach You About At Church

April 12, 2017 by Lipton 4 Comments

“A Mormon has a right to believe what he will. His thoughts may be as free as the unconfined air, and his conscience should by no means be restrained by legal enactments. But his acts are quite a different thing.” -Raleigh News and Observer, July 20, 1881

In which everyone gets the clap

April 7, 2017 by TheShitWizard 2 Comments

Written with an easy style that informs as well as entertains, City of Sin is an eagle-eyed view of the English branch of the world’s oldest profession through the ages, from the first girls brought in chains to our shores for the sport of the Romans, right up to modern sex workers advertising on the internet, scoring publishing deals and causing the Daily Mail to work themselves into self-righteous froths. Taking in those who chose to enter the profession as well as those forced into […]

Think 45 is bad? It could be worse…

One of Penguin’s Little Black Classics range, I picked this up for less than a quid during a recent odyssey to an amazing bookstore (I tend to make pilgrimages to book stores in the way someone else might visit cathedrals or other holy sites). I may have lost 3 hours and a decent amount of money, but I did walk out with two bulging bags of treats. The Little Black Classic range is great for this kind of shopping, enabling you to walk away with […]
