Three romance novellas, and I’m deciding how I feel about novellas

May 8, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

I haven’t read an overwhelming number of novellas, and at least one which you lovely folks seem to love has been on hold at my library FOREVER. So, in my limited experience, I’ve found them to be, mostly, pleasantly diverting but lacking true staying power. There are two — Courtney Milan’s A Kiss for Midwinter and Unlocked that I have liked a lot, but otherwise I’ve felt that the stores suffer from their shortened length. We lose characterization, or the conclusion feels rushed, or the driving conflict is either […]

Is 2015 the year of Tessa Dare?

April 30, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 7 Comments

You know what they say — leave no stone unturned, no Tessa Dare unread. With this noble goal occupying valued space at the top of my priorities, every book that comes off hold at the library is a step closer to enlightenment. After my barely coherent fangirling over the second book in the Castles Ever After series, I was really looking forward to working backward to this one before #3 is released later this year (squee!) And I was not disappointed — Romancing the Duke (4.5 stars, tbh) is […]

A Tessa Dare book with reformed pirates!

April 24, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 3 Comments

I call this one a solid 3.5 stars. It started out really strong for me, and finished slightly less so for reasons I can’t put a finger on, but I’ll get into nitty-gritties after a quick plot summary from Goodreads: “Desperate to escape a loveless marriage and society’s constraints, pampered heiress Sophia Hathaway jilts her groom, packs up her paints and sketchbook, and assumes a new identity, posing as a governess to secure passage on the Aphrodite. She wants a life of her own: unsheltered, […]

The romance novelist and the Duke

April 18, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Emilia “Mia” Carrington’s father created a scandal by openly romancing the Duchess of Pindar, while her husband was locked up in an insane asylum. Her father’s affair brought Mia frequently into the company of the Duchess’ son, Evander Septimus Brody, who young Mia developed a crush on. One fateful afternoon, having overheard Evander and some of his school friends ridiculing a foolish love poem Mia had written, she furiously declared that she would rather marry any man in the world before she chose […]

The housekeeper and the prince

April 18, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars Miss Elise Fountain used to be a teacher at the school for wayward girls in Pennyroyal Green, but was fired after she spoke inappropriately to one of the patrons. Now she’s managed to get a recommendation from the powerful Redmond family and is desperate to secure a position as housekeeper to the formidable Lord Philippe Lavay, an exiled Bourbon prince recovering from a near-fatal robbery in the village. He gives her a two week trial, expecting she will be gone before one has […]

A Lovely and Sincere Carla Kelly Historical Romance? Shocking!

April 14, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 8 Comments

The Wedding Journey is another lovely and highly recommendable Carla Kelly Regency romance about genuinely kind and likable people falling in love against the backdrop of war. I really enjoyed it at the same time as I realised that I have read too many of her novels too close together. All of Kelly’s best elements can be found here, as well as her one besetting sin minor shortcoming. Profoundly shy, Doctor Jesse Randall has loved Nell Mason for years. She and her family have followed […]
