A woman’s got to have a code – double Cannonball

September 29, 2015 by Malin 20 Comments

Before I begin this review, I have to say that in a genre where where so many books have absolutely atrocious covers, where readers pick up and love the books despite the cover art, this book has one of my favourite covers in years. It fills me with joy and perfectly encapsulates the contents of the book. I wish more romances had covers this great. While many of Julie Anne Long’s Pennyroyal Green books can be read out of order or completely independently of each […]

Her brother got to go away to school, Catherine was tutored at home by a governess. So many dresses get ruined in historical romances

September 18, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 5 Comments

The cover for this book is preposterous, but also… foreshadowing? So, I really liked this book. Both of the leads were wonderful, and I enjoyed how well the romance was integrated with the non-romantic plot. It goes something like this: Edward de Lacey, the second son of a Duke, has always been the responsible one. After his father dies, leaving behind whisperings of a possible first marriage that could invalidate the legitimacy of his and his brothers’ birth and claim to the title, Edward sets […]

A Historical Romance That’s All About the B-Plot

September 15, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 8 Comments

Again the Magic  has all of the trademark Kleypas smolder and charm, but a plotting issue which I feel gets in the way of the novel’s success and frustrated me again on my recent re-read; however, I have returned to the secondary plot several times as it has one of my favourite heroes and is, with The Heiress Effect, the romance for which I really wished a separate novella, or novel, had existed for the heroine’s sister. Meeting as children, Lady Aline* Marsden and stable boy […]

She started an unorthodox penpal scheme. You won’t believe what happened next!

September 12, 2015 by Malin 9 Comments

Did you like my click-bait headline? I’m not going to lie, I’m quite proud of it. 🙂 Shy and scientifically-minded Miss Madeline Gracechurch suffers from anxiety attacks and couldn’t bear the thought of having to be out in society during the Season. So she comes up with a fictional suitor, a strapping and handsome Scotsman that she met on the beach in Brighton and who’s unfortunately gone off to fight Napoleon. She keeps writing letters to the brave Captain Logan MacKenzie to keep up with […]

Didn’t really fall for this one

September 9, 2015 by Malin 2 Comments

On the evening of her betrothal party, the duke Miss Sarah Forrester is set to marry, confesses that he is in love with another. Sarah is instantly named “the girl who lost a Duke” in society and prepares to become a complete social outcast. However, one of the leading ladies in society advises her to reinvent herself, and soon Sarah is known as “The Golden Lady”, the glittering, carefree toast of the town. Not everyone is as happy about her drastic changes, though. Sarah’s childhood […]
