A historical romance with a spirited wallflower

December 15, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

Miss Lucy Towerton is very tall and until she inherited a fortune from a distant aunt, she was a wallflower without many promising prospects. So when Cyrus Ravensthorpe – handsome, rich, yet with some unfortunate family connections (his mother, the daughter of a duke, ran away to marry his father, the family solicitor) proposed marriage to her, she could hardly believe her luck. Now her mother wants her to break off their betrothal so she can catch herself a more suitable husband, possibly even Mr. […]

A novella I didn’t quite warm up to.

December 12, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 1 Comment

What we have here, I think, is partly a novella problem, and partly a fanservice problem. Tessa Dare has written fabulous novellas — my favorites being The Scandalous, Dissolute, No-Good Mr. Wright and Beauty and the Blacksmith — but I so frequently find myself underwhelmed by novellas in general that I can’t help but believe they’re just tricky by nature. They’re so short that character development must be sacrificed, and whatever obstacle standing in the way of the characters’ HEA needs to be overcome quickly […]

Historical Romance and Visits with Favourite Characters

December 10, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 6 Comments

I have an addition to the Things That Occur to Me While Reading Historical Romance Novels: LUST IS IMPERVIOUS TO COLD. Never mind all those times people in these books get down to their skivvies in drafty old manor houses, lust’s powers are even greater than I supposed. How else could a person wearing a linen shift and corset while standing barefoot in a snow squall be aware of anything than the fact that she is bitterly cold? But I have gotten ahead of myself. […]

A historical romance that seems to forget it was supposed to be romantic

December 10, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

At seventeen, Miss Sophie Baker is looking forward to her debut in society. She’s only a few months away from graduating from a prestigious ladies’ academy and her future looks bright. Then her father dies suddenly, destitute after having been swindled by a con man. Sophie’s whole world changes and instead of a season and balls and pretty dresses, she’s left to fend for herself, making a living as a governess. She blames the Earl of Ashby for her change in circumstance, as it was […]

Historical Romance and a New B-List Author

December 7, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 3 Comments

Christi Caldwell is a historical romance author I have been meaning to try for a while and the free copy of Forever Betrothed, Never the Bride helped with that considerably. Pledged to each other as children, Lady Emmaline Fitzhugh and Lord Drake have spent virtually no time together and she is sick and tired of it. Relegated to the sidelines of her own life, Emmaline learns of Drake’s return to London and decides it is time to GET ON WITH IT ALREADY! She doesn’t really question […]

A Regency romance where the hero has violet eyes

December 2, 2015 by Malin 5 Comments

1.5 stars Warning! There will be spoilers for the plot in this review – because I have to pick apart the mediocre plot to fully get my scathe on. Lord Tristan Knight has come into the Earl of Ellington after his estranged father died unexpectedly in a carriage accident. As the late Earl blamed his son for the death of Lady Ellington, stabbed to death by an East End bandit, Tristan has been absent for a long time. His younger sister Emily was left alone […]
