A Simple Love Story

December 8, 2016 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

At the tail end of 2015 I listened to my first Romance audio book. It was an interesting experience. Not my favorite, but also not bad. Since I started the Stud Club books that way, with Tessa Dare’s One Dance with a Duke I figured I would continue on that path for the series and picked up Twice Tempted by a Rogue. Then I promptly forgot to read it as I worked through other books this year. When I finished We Should All Be Feminists […]

Four Christmas Romance Novellas, No Gifts

November 24, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 1 Comment

That’s right, I was reading Christmas novellas in October (and reviewing them in November). You Had Me At Christmas: A Holiday Anthology with contemporary romances by Karina Bliss, Stephanie Doyle, Jennifer Lohmann, and Molly O’Keefe also included a Laura Florand novella called Snow-Kissed which I reviewed separately. The anthology let me try four new-to-me authors and while I’m not sure I’ll be racing out to buy more of their books, in a genre with this much choice and so many writers to wade through, this […]

Spiritualism and the Great War

November 2, 2016 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I have been aware of Mary Robinette Kowal for some time now.  Several of my favorite authors sing her praises regularly, John Scalzi in particular springs to mind as I write this.  Last year Kowal went on a book tour with Marie Brennan.  Brennan writes the delightful Lady Trent Memoirs series, of which I am a fan, so it was exciting to be able to attend a signing of hers for the first time.  As Kowal was coming too, it seemed time to finally pick […]

One of my favorite romances this year.

When I reviewed Cecilia Grant previously, I mentioned how she seems to delight in turning tropes on their ears. A Woman Entangled is the last book in her Blackshear Family series, and Grant’s target here is perfect. With overt nods to both Pride and Prejudice and Emma, Grant uses the romance of Kate Westbrook and Nick Blackshear to make larger points about vanity, respectability, and expectations. What I find particularly interesting about her romances is that, while her books are in company with other top-quality […]

The madness of me, reading this book

October 26, 2016 by alwaysanswerb 7 Comments

2.5 stars This book tried my patience. I started off loving it — I liked that the heroine was an independent, wealthy widow who had loved her husband and had a seemingly healthy relationship with sex. I was intrigued by the hero, who has savant tendencies and is on the spectrum. I bought their initial attraction. Everything was going just fine. And then the plot happened. Like, omg, so much plot. There is a murder, that is connected to another murder, and the hero is […]

Cast off the Shackles of Yesterday

October 17, 2016 by melanir 3 Comments

The Suffragette Scandal is the book six in Milan’s Brothers Sinister series, of which I have read none of the previous volumes. The nice thing about romance series is that you can jump in and out of the series without loosing any context. I suspect there was a scene or two that would have been more enjoyable if I’d read the other novels, but I understood this one just fine. All in all, it’s an excellent romance novel and I enjoyed most of it. I […]
