As far as steamy romances go, Secrets and Sensibilities isn’t one, similar to Julia Quinn’s romances in which steamy sex scenes have no part in the storyline. Unlike Quinn romances, though, Secrets and Sensibilities also lacks interesting characters, witty dialogue, romantic courtship, and sexual sizzle. Bland, flat, and boring best describe a story that began with great potential. Read the full review
The Duke of Dark Secrets
Much like Eloisa James’ book Seven Minutes in Heaven, this one deals with a lord in search of a governess for children he’s unprepared to deal with. This is a favorite of mine that I decided to re-read after thinking there were a lot of similarities between the two, and I have to say this book is much better. The Duke of Denford is one of those unexpected aristocrats – several members of his family succumbed to accidents or illnesses, and he is the last surviving […]
Strangers in the Night
This is an older Loretta Chase that I hadn’t read until I was intrigued by Malin’s recent review. To be honest, I’m not sure if I liked it as much as the books that follow this. It’s quite a change from Lord of Scoundrels, to be sure. There were parts of it that I found tedious, and I almost quit reading a few times. I persevered, and while this didn’t become a favorite of mine, I can see the characters growth and the complex nature of their relationship. […]
Manic Pixie Dream Lady
I didn’t dislike Devil in Spring. It was an enjoyable read. As soon as I was done and thinking about the review, the words “manic pixie dream girl” came rushing into my brain. It’s not entirely fair. But kind of. Lady Pandora Ravenel is not like the other girls. We know this because everyone says it all the time. She’s different, she’s not like the others, she’s a wild child. And Gabriel Challon, Lord St. Vincent treats her like a child a lot of the […]
A slave and a Confederate soldier fall in love. What could go wrong?
Alyssa Cole is an author well-liked by other authors I like. Her Off the Grid trilogy is especially popular, but the post-apocalyptic setting isn’t my favorite. I did like her historical short story Agnes Moor’s Wild Knight so when An Extraordinary Union came up for pre-order, I didn’t hesitate. I paid a full sawbuck for this e-book, y’all. That’s how much faith I had that I was going to like it. An Extraordinary Union did not disappoint. The short version: Ellen Burns uses her eidetic memory to serve […]
An Egyptian Road Trip
This book has been compared in other reviews to the movie, The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. I enjoyed that movie, with the swashbuckling hero and sassy heroine; this book, not so much. Ginesse Braxton is the heroine here, and she is the progeny of renowned archeologist parents. She also has six younger brothers that are making their mark in the world, and she longs to be taken seriously as well. During her studies at Cambridge, she stumbles across some papers that convince her […]
