I sit down to read A Breath of Snow and Ashes over a year after finishing the last Outlander book, A Fiery Cross, which for the uninitiated is literally just a tolerance test for how long a reader can stand the unabridged minutiae of unremarkable 18th century backwoods living, plus a sprinkling of UTTERLY BONKERS NONSENSE to trick them into believing much more is happening than is actually happening. That last sentence should hopefully provide some understanding as to why it took me so long […]
A historical romance with sensible people, lovely!
So I can’t remember the last time I picked up a physical book and actually finished reading it. I have, let’s call her, an “aggressive reader” who’s just graduating from board books to paper pages. She is beyond fascinated with Mommy’s books, and is ready to read them and abuse the heck out of them. As a non-spine breaker, it makes my soul hurt to see her grab books. But she’s getting better! So when I saw that my library didn’t have a waitlist for […]
A slow burn romance that is worth the wait
I’ve read a lot of historical romance over the years, and this book was so much more than I was expecting! It’s not the typical tale, and maybe the romance doesn’t fit the mold of the traditional genre but I devoured this in very short order and wanted more. Thank you narfna for your wonderful reviews of this series that prompted me to pick this up. This is book one in the Blackshear family saga, and tells the tale of Martha Russell, who is newly […]
“Here, tell me which scent you prefer. Lilies and whale vomit, or lemon balm and beaver’s arse.”
I like Tessa Dare. I know her books are derisively considered by many to be HINO (Historical In Name Only) but that’s something that’s never bothered me, personally. I like that her characters have modern sensibilities, because I don’t want to read about a hero with traditional Regency-era attitudes toward women. I like that her books each tend to have a designated Element of Silliness (see: Romancing the Duke‘s cosplayers, Any Duchess Will Do‘s terrible knitting) and in this one it’s the recurring joke of […]
Favorite book of this series. Loved it.
Please ignore the overgrown beefsteak on the cover of this book. I cannot imagine a worse dude to put on the cover to represent this lovely story. Okay, well, that’s a lie. I can imagine worse. But still! It is not representative! That is a LARGE MAN WITH UNREALISTICALLY LARGE MUSCLES. The hero of this book is a normal man with a more lean physique and probably very pale, because he is English in the 1800s and where is the sun? And also he is […]
Why has this author stopped publishing books? Her voice is so unique!
Okay, is there a legit reason why Cecilia Grant has stopped publishing romance novels? Because I read a lot of them, and both of the books I’ve read by her so far stand apart. It’s a little hard to explain, but her voice is so unique in the genre. 2013 is now five years ago (gross), and that is when she published her last book, so it is high time*. *Some Google-fu has revealed that her once-dormant blog is now semi-active, and she is apparently […]
