Hellion with a heart of gold

June 1, 2018 by Jen K 3 Comments

This was supposed to be a fluffy, fun read before I tackled my Kindred re-read but instead it made me feel all emotional! I first met Vere Mallory in The Lord of Scoundrels, where he was the somewhat dense, but overall likable and easy going friend of Dain.  This novel gives Vere’s extra depths, explaining why he chooses to drown his sorrows in a daze of booze, fighting, and women after losing almost everyone in his family that meant anything to him.  Vere was the […]

If You Don’t Want Your Estranged Wife to Show Up, You Probably Shouldn’t Spend Her Money

I picked this one up based on Malin’s review.  One nice thing about Cannonball Read is that with Malin, emmalita and Mrs. Julien, I had a nice list of go to authors handy when I finally decided to try romance. However, having worked my way through most historical romance novels by Courtney Milan, Tessa Dare, Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Julie Ann Long, and Sarah McLean among others, I am always excited when I notice a review for an author I had not noticed before. This […]

Screw the Lord, Come for the Lady

May 25, 2018 by Jen K 4 Comments

I enjoyed Loretta Chase’s A Duke in Shining Armor and The Dressmakers novels but wasn’t entirely where else to go in her back catalog.  I noticed this novel had quite a few reviews, and decided to give it a shot even though most of the romances I have read have been written much more recently.  Before this, the only 20th century romance I had read was Anya Seton’s Katherine and I hated that one (though it had a decent amount of historical detail).  And Outlander.  […]

I did like the bit where Theresa discovers how to make “magic elf-bread”

3.5 stars This is a re-read. My original review of the book can be found here. As of me posting this, the book is on sale for $0.99 at most e-book retailers.  This book was such a disappointment to me when it came out, and as I mention in my original review, it was not an easy book for Ms. Milan to write, and felt a bit cobbled together and nothing really worked all that well as a result. With the next volume in the series just […]

Three Revolutionary War romances.

May 8, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

This book is actually three novellas, all written under the umbrella premise of Eliza Hamilton collecting stories about her husband, Alexander, in service of recording his legacy. I enjoyed all three of the novellas, but I definitely enjoyed Courtney Milan’s the most (not really surprised there). I’m also not really surprised that I enjoyed Alyssa Cole’s the least, as I’ve not had great luck with her books in the past. But overall, this is a solid trio of romances, set in a time period I […]

Permanently Marked by the Past

May 7, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is another one of those novels I have been meaning to read in order to branch out, and Book Riot’s Read Harder challenge provided that final push to turn it from a vague intention to a reality. While Hester’s father was descended from a free family tracing their freedom back to the Revolution, Hester was born into slavery.  Her father sold himself into slavery to be with her mother, a slave in South Carolina. Unfortunately, the master he arranged his deal with died only […]
