A Long Awaited Return to Historical Romance

Palace of Rogues: Lady Derring Takes a Lover by Julie Anne Long

June 10, 2019 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

Huzzah, Julie Anne Long has returned to Regency historical romances. Granted, the cover is displeasing, but the contents are not. Delilah, Lady Derring is not only recently widowed, she’s also discovered she is virtually penniless, and had the delightful experience of meeting her husband’s mistress, Mrs. Angelique Breedlove, immediately on the heels of the first two shocks. Showing disregard for the notion that they are competitors,  and demonstrating intestinal fortitude and chutzpah, Delilah and Angelique take the jewels they have from the erstwhile Earl Derring […]

Really, a life of crime is not the primrose path it’s cracked up to be.

Any Old Diamonds by KJ Charles

June 10, 2019 by Emmalita 9 Comments

I’m not sure what I was expecting, but I wasn’t expecting what I got from this book, and now I can’t believe I haven’t been reading KJ Charles for years. Any Old Diamonds is a fantastic read, part romance, part revenge plot, part heist. This is a tough book to talk about because it’s almost like a puzzle box. You can almost read it forwards and backwards. That makes it hard to avoid spoilers. Alexander Pyne-ffoulkes is the younger son of the Duke of Ilvar. The […]

Now That’s More Like It!

Devil's Daughter by Lisa Kleyas

May 1, 2019 by Mrs. Julien 2 Comments

The Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas series has turned into “Sebastian and Evie’s Kids Get Hitched” and I am not complaining. Devil’s Daughter has the trademark Kleypas elements of wit, charm, a compelling hero, and delightful smolder. I’m just going to  assume you are familiar with all of the books and characters that feed into this one. Readers first met Phoebe, Lady Clare, as a squalling infant in one of my favourite Sebastian, Lord Saint Vincent moments from any of his appearances: “There, darling,” St. Vincent had been known […]

Any Old Diamonds (Lilywhite Boys, #1) by K.J. Charles

April 10, 2019 by narfna 2 Comments

I hope that my life continues to be full of K.J. Charles books that do not disappoint me. I know I’ve still got about half her back catalogue to go through, and I hope all those unread books are just as fun to read. This one is a romance, of course, but it’s also a heist novel featuring Alec, the estranged son of a duke out to make his father pay for the damage he’s caused Alec and his siblings, so Alec hires two notorious […]

The best in the series so far. This is more like it, Ms. Kleypas

Devil's Daughter by Lisa Kleypas

April 1, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

This is the fifth book in the Ravenels series. While you don’t have to have read the previous books in the series, it would probably enhance your enjoyment and make you more familiar with most of the cast of characters. While you also don’t NEED to have read it, you really should read Devil in Winter, because it’s a classic of the genre, and will give you more insight in some of the supporting characters here. Plot summary from Goodreads, because I finished this book over a month […]

Yelling at Terrible Men

Mrs. Martin’s Incomperable Adventure by Courtney Milan

March 25, 2019 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Author’s Note: Sometimes I write villains who are subtle and nuanced. This is not one of those times. The Terrible Nephew is terrible, and terrible things happen to him. Sometime villains really are bad and wrong, and sometimes, we want them to suffer a lot of consequences. I received this novella as an ARC and this is an honest review. Mrs. Bertrice Martin is a wealthy widow of 73 who is bored and depressed. Miss Violetta Beauchamps is a poor spinster of 69 who has […]
