A ridiculous farce with a core of sweetness.

Something Fabulous by Alexis Hall

February 23, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

This book is funny and adorable with a side of aggravation. This review will be short because I never know how to talk about funny books in reviews. Our main character is Valentine, a young duke who is set and ready to do his duty by marrying the girl he’s been betrothed to since he was a child, a thing both their fathers wished for them. Only the girl, Arabella, has no desire to get married, and she hates Valentine, so she absconds with herself […]

“I’ll take your bet,” he said grimly. “I’m going to win it. And in three months, I’m going to put this back on your finger, and take you to bed, and do things to you that are outlawed in the civilized world.”

Devil in Winter (Wallflowers, #3) by Lisa Kleypas

I can see why this is a lovable book. I think Kleypas basically caught lightning in a bottle with her two main characters, Evie and Sebastian, but I don’t have faith that she can recreate the magic in other books, so I probably won’t be reading any of her other stuff. I’m glad I finally read this one, though, even if I didn’t think it was A M A Z I N G or anything. The plot here is that Evangeline Jenner needs to marry […]

“‘You are a scoundrel,’ she whispered furiously. ‘Yes,’ he agreed. ‘I’m thinking of starting a Society of Gentlemen Scoundrels.’ ‘You’re millennia too late. It already exists and is called the patriarchy.'”

The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels (Dangerous Damsels, #1) by India Holton

February 9, 2022 by narfna 9 Comments

I actually requested the sequel to this book on Netgalley and was approved before I realized it was the second book in a series, and while it didn’t seem like it would be necessary to read this one first since romance books can usually be read on their own, I thought I’d give it a shot anyway. And it was a pretty good time! So this book is about lady pirates who fly their houses around England. They take no offense at thievery and assassination, […]

“She unsettled him; he anchored her. Together, they could be more than they were apart.”

Do You Want to Start a Scandal by Tessa Dare

February 3, 2022 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

I had a good time with Do You Want to Start a Scandal, primarily because it does one of my favorite things by putting a good deal of emotional intelligence into a character who may not be expected to have it and then let them deduce the world around them. It is deployed to good use as Charlotte Highwood goes head-to-head with Diplomat turned Spy Piers Brandon, Lord Granville after they are caught together during the Parkhurst ball but are not in fact the couple […]

“It’s so much easier to obey orders. It’s not much fun to think.”

Spectred Isle (Green Men, #1) by K.J. Charles

January 8, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

On the one hand, I wish I would have read this sooner, because it’s great. On the other, I wish I would have saved it, because the sequel seems to be postponed indefinitely for some ground-up retooling, and I would prefer to have it as soon as possible. I found the worldbuilding here to be one of the more intriguing urban fantasy set-ups I’ve read, especially when you factor in that a large part of it uses the consequences of WWI in such a thoughtful […]

“Kate realized she had a grave problem. She was infatuated. Or mildly insane. Possibly both.”

A Lady by Midnight (Spindle Cove #3) by Tessa Dare

January 6, 2022 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

I can always trust Tessa Dare to bust a slump, and as exhaustion is one of my last remaining COVID symptoms, I’m not so much slumped as I am distractible. A Lady by Midnight took care of it either way, and I enjoyed my evening with it so much that I’m rating it five stars, and I know that I am one of the few around Cannonball Read to do so. I get it, but I’m also keeping my rating as is. I am currently […]
