Needs more vice and virtue

February 18, 2018 by yesknopemaybe Leave a Comment

3.5 stars. I kept hearing about this fun new book featuring queer kids living in historical England from several of my bookish friends. I’m not sure if I was in a weird mood or what, but my experience of this book was not exactly what I would call “fun.” I definitely enjoyed it, it’s just that if you tell a story about queer people in a historical setting, it’s definitely not just fun and games. That fact made this a bit of an anxious read […]

In the Navy…

February 13, 2018 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

Reverse of the Medal is the 11th book in Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey & Maturin series, and having got this far it’s safe to say it’s one I’ve enjoyed. In fact, that would be rather understating it – at this point I have lost any objectivity I may have once had, and am a fully-fledged fangirl (especially when it comes to Maturin). Reverse of the Medal hasn’t knocked that status at all, and in fact gave me a little more than I’d have expected to stress […]

The rough poetry of life…

February 9, 2018 by Leedock Leave a Comment

As much as I wish I could enjoy Russian classics, I tend to get bogged down in the political and philosophical discussions that go on and on and on and on. Most of the characters come across as self-important and obstinate and everyone just sits around arguing and insulting one another. I know this is an oversimplification but I just don’t get the appeal. “The Summer Guest”, a contemporary novel and only Russian adjacent,  only reinforced that for me. Three stories are  interwoven here: A husband […]

I do love nothing in this world so well as you. Is not that strange?

From Goodreads, because I’m lazy, and it sums up the book nicely: Six teenagers’ lives intertwine during one thrilling summer full of romantic misunderstandings and dangerous deals in this sparkling retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. After she is kicked out of boarding-school, seventeen-year-old Beatrice goes to her uncle’s estate in Long Island. But Hey Nonny Nonny is more than just a rundown old mansion. Beatrice’s cousin, Hero, runs a struggling speakeasy out of the basement – one that might not survive the summer.  Along […]

A lepidopterist and a taxidermist walk into a mystery.

January 29, 2018 by Leedock 2 Comments

Another Victorian murder mystery rife with witty banter, palpable sexual tension, and painfully tender interludes. This is the third book in the Veronica Speedwell Mystery series by Deanna Raybourn. If you have read the other two books, you need no encouragement. If you haven’t, read them NOW.  They are completely addicting. If you need further encouragement, this is the FIRST sentence of A Treacherous Curse: “I assure you, I am perfectly capable of identifying a phallus when I see one,” Stoker informed me, clipping the words sharply. “And that […]
