Rich language and culture

Spanish Is the Language of My Family by Michael Genhart

April 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I assumed that Spanish Is the Language of My Family would take the format of “this is my family, and we speak Spanish” and then a list of wonderful Spanish words such as an alphabet book might give or beginning Spanish words would be given. Well, we get the wonderful words, but also a bit more. There is a spelling bee and a history lesson on how many children (we will learn from the 1930s to 1960s) that were not allowed to speak Spanish outside […]

You have to pick a book or two

Wombat Said Come In by Carmen Agra Deedy

Two White Rabbits by Jairo Buitrago

September 30, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Picture book round up time! Both these books can be for any age, however, there are sensitive issues that might not be for everyone. Wombat Said Come In is a multiple layered story. It is about friendship, loss and even about limits. Wombat is sitting down when he hears a knock, a friend is in need. The land is on fire and one by one the knocks on the door find another friend in need. Of course, maybe a bit hesitantly (especially when the house […]

I had a book read to me part two

Dear Little One by Nina Laden

Paletero Man by Lucky Diaz

June 2, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A little while ago I received an emailed newsletter from a publisher. I don’t remember now which one, but it had some titles for GLBT+ and Pride goodies. It also included a video link of a Miss Terra Cotta Sugarbaker doing a Drag Queen Storytime. And as often happens when on the internet, down a rabbit hole of people reading books I went. One such person was Miss Althea and her toy sloth friend, Cecil. I found two books I might not have otherwise because […]

Pride and Reading

What Are Your Words?: A Book About Pronouns by Katherine Locke

Prince & Knight: Tale of the Shadow King by Daniel Haack

Julián at the Wedding (Julián, #2) by Jessica Love

May 27, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Pride Month is right around the corner. And thought I could easily write 250 words for each of the below picture book, I like have this longer collection as each one touches on a different aspect of pride and the GLBTQ+ community. Both for the picture book crowd (with some exceptions) and adults, these are books that should be put on your radar and TBR lists.   What Are Your Words?: A Book About Pronouns by Katherine Locke and Anne Passchier (illustrations): This is a […]

Not like I expected

Virgin by Analicia Sotelo

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have this as a rating of 3, but Virgin by Analicia Sotelo is more of a 3.5 rating. And not because this is a bad read, it is actually good. I enjoyed the straightforward text and imagery. However, sometimes she gets a bit “poetic” and too fanciful for my tastes. And while I like poetry, and “flowery” poetry has its place, I was not looking for it here. The mix of both straightforward and the flowery was not a hundred percent for me. Sotelo […]

And I thought it odd when my classmates when to NJ to visit family

Between Us and Abuela: A Family Story from the Border by Mitali Perkins

December 6, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Between Us and Abuela: A Family Story from the Border is a contemporary story on several levels. Of course, it is first a Christmasstory. Maria, Juan and their mother are going to see their Grandmother. They take a long trip to see her. And they bring presents. And second, it is a story about a family that must be creative about how they deliver said gifts, as they are separated by the border, the fence and the Border Patrol. Yet, this is a happy story […]
