A week of family

Family Poems for Every Day of the Week : Poemas familiares para cada dia de la semana by Francisco X. Alarcón

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have been holding onto over 1000 emails that have at least one online reader copy. At least one of those had four. I was skimming the titles, looking at the links… nope nope nope…. Delete, save, nope nope, next time…. Until I came to  Family Poems for Every Day of the Week : Poemas familiares para cada dia de la semana.  The other books were a mix of genres, but this said “Poems.” Okay, that is what I need. Something short and hopefully fun. […]

I’m With the Mariachi Band

Adela’s Mariachi Band by Denise Vega

March 21, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I decided that when I got an email from Charlesbridge (a publisher) I would read some of the twelve online picture book reader copies included. I ended up reading ten (one had been previously read, so technically nine). I didn’t read two because the covers didn’t “speak to me” but I saved the links in case they someday would. One of the reads was Adela’s Mariachi Band. Due in mid-August, this story by Denise Vega and illustrated by Erika Rodriguez Medina was not what I […]

Monster hunter between homework assignments.

Dona Quixote V01 Rise of the Knight by Rey Terciero

March 11, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Rey Terciero (aka Rex Ogle) made a cute, modern story (a diverse cast) that has a fun take on the Don Quixote story with Dona Quixote V01 Rise of the Knight. The history, culture and modern issues of a Hispanic family unfold while we deal with the idea of trying to be “not too much” but then again being who we are all the while fighting monsters, shapeshifters, ghosts and real world creatures. There are a few cliques (the best friends’ family are “jocks and […]

When Boy Met Girl, she changed his world

They Call Her Fregona: A Border Kid's Poems by David Bowles

March 1, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My vacation was filled with snacks and naps. In between that it was filled with reading books and three of those were sequels (two volumes that were volume threes and one book was volume two). One of those reads was a more a companion novel, or I should say, a prose poetry story/novel and not a traditional novel. Yet, it  does help to have read They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid’s Poems by David Bowles first. This time we follow Joanna, or “Fregona” (a […]

A red-headed, freckled Mexican American border kid

They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid's Poems by David Bowles

January 16, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

CBR16SweetChallenge #New (representation in my reading)   They Call Me Güero: A Border Kid’s Poems came to my attention because there was an online reader copy of the companion novel, They Call Her Fregona: A Border Kid’s Poems and I realized that while it might not need to be read in order, it might be a good idea to get this first one. Author David Bowles has a story that was new to me (after all I thought I didn’t know them, but I had read […]

A lovely story about a tough situation

Only for a Little While by Gabriela Orozco Beltg

June 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I find a book about a subject I know little about, I always wonder, “Is there really a need for it?” And then I read the book. Sometimes I read it and think, no we didn’t need it. Or sometimes I think we do need it, but I feel other books have handled the theme better. But with Only for a Little While by Gabriela Orozco Belt. I figured, we do need it, as I was thinking I know there are books out there, […]
