Lyra is finally back

The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman

April 18, 2019 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Many, many years ago, my cousin recommended that I read The Golden Compass (1996) by Philip Pullman. As I began reading, I was skeptical. Every human has a little animal (called a daemon) that follows them around? I thought it was weird and wasn’t sure I would get into it. But as I continued reading, I became attached to the characters and immersed in the story. Now that it’s been well over a decade since I read The Golden Compass, I can remember very few details of the actual story, […]

A boy, his canoe, and the beginning

The Book of Dust Vol. 1 : La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman

March 20, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

I quickly and deeply fell in love with Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy.  The ending of the third book has me in tears each time I read it.  However, when I heard that he was writing a prequel with Lyra “at the centre of the story”,  I rolled my eyes.  We already have three books where she is a main character.  How much could have happened to her before the start of The Golden Compass?  Then last year a fellow Cannonballer warmly reviewed it (apologies, […]

I love revisiting books at different times in my life. Perspective is so weird.

The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman

March 19, 2019 by narfna 1 Comment

The last time I read this series, it was before I joined Goodreads, and way before I started reviewing books regularly, so it took me a minute to put my thoughts together. I’d never read this book critically before, only with the half-frightened fascination a kid has for something they find intriguing but don’t really understand, and then again when I was older, to try and relive that feeling. When I first read this book a year or so after it was published, it scared […]

One who cannot cast away a treasure at need is in fetters.

Lord of the Rings – 5/5 I am revisiting Lord of the Rings this Thanksgiving season, mostly while I do yardwork and household chores avoiding work and staving off boredom and frenetic energy. I am also listening to the audiobooks this time, and the last time I read the books was in 2004. I also previously read them twice: in high school and then in college when the movies came out. Here some things about my reading: I always skip the songs, which almost always […]

The One I’ve Been Waiting For

October 21, 2018 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

For most of CBR10, I’ve been in a real reading rut. While I’ve read plenty of books I liked, there have been only a few that met my criteria for The Kind of Book I Love to Read: The story is engrossing: I have to feel like I can’t put it down. It’s not just engrossing, but also evokes specific emotions: I love a book that makes me feel happy or excited, or that awakens my curiosity or makes me want to learn something new. […]

I want a daemon!

January 15, 2018 by Jen K 4 Comments

I loved His Dark Materials trilogy so I was very excited when I realized that Philip Pullman had a new novel out.  I was a little bit less sure if I necessarily wanted a new novel in the same universe but was definitely willing to give it a shot. As much as I love Harry Potter,  I would at this point prefer to get another murder mystery from J.K. Rowling than another tie in to Hogwarts and that universe.  As a result, I wasn’t sure […]
