The Original “Poor Little Rich Girl”

Million Dollar Baby by Philip Van Rensselaer

January 27, 2025 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I spent half of this book wondering if I’d read it before but enjoying it so much I dashed through it in about a day. It is very entertaining and readable, and you can understand why Barbara Hutton took on Philip as a companion. He is a fun narrator and gets across emotion and events very well. Million Dollar Baby is a biography of Barbara Hutton and a memoir the time that Van Rensselaer spent with her in the late 1950s. It is not at […]

The Bad Friend We Can’t Resist

Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner

June 6, 2022 by Sofi Keren Leave a Comment

It had been years since I’d read anything by Jennifer Weiner. I’m not sure why, exactly. Years ago, I enjoyed Good In Bed quite a bit, a novel about a woman whose ex-boyfriend writes an article about loving someone plus-size, and In Her Shoes, a story about two very different sisters (which was made into a movie starring Cameron Diaz). I also admire the the writing shes’s done over the years about how the literary world doesn’t take women’s fiction seriously, relegating popular books written […]

Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems

January 10, 2018 by Jen K 1 Comment

Set about two years after China Rich Girlfriend, Rich People Problems starts with an event to bring the whole family together – Su Yi, the matriarch of the Young family, has a heart attack and is not expected to live long, prompting Nick to finally return home in an attempt to reconcile with his beloved grandmother. The family shenanigans are as fun and gossip filled as the rest of the books in the series, and Eddie, the clueless Hong Kong cousin, adds a lot of […]

More name dropping and designer brands

January 7, 2018 by Jen K 2 Comments

I read Crazy Rich Asians a few years ago while on a cruise because it seemed like the perfect book for that type of setting. Despite enjoying it, I was in no rush to read the sequel China Rich Girlfriend because it seemed like a good stand alone novel, and I wasn’t sure I saw the need to continue. While China Rich Girlfriend continues the story of Nick and Rachel, their story isn’t the main plot of this novel. Instead it introduces a few new […]

The easiest way is always to work through a suitable man

July 11, 2016 by borisanne 2 Comments

Man, I needed this book, and I don’t mean that in any particularly deep way. It’s just that the last couple of months, I’ve been deep into the Stephen King, and the Naomi Novik, and then unexpectedly took the deep dive into Red Rising. All of which has been absolutely outstanding, but it’s been kind of super rich reading. A very dear friend recommended The Summer Before the War, and so I put it on my library hold list… and that very same night it […]
