Cover of Heather Fawcett’s Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales.

I wondered briefly how I might compose a paper on the subject—disappearing islands are a motif in the folklore of many countries.

Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales by Heather Fawcett

I am always going to be here for Emily Wilde figuring out the unsolvable through scholarship and observation. Having poisoned Wendell’s step-mother, Queen Arna, deposed her, and found the door to Wendell’s kingdom, Emily and Wendell are ready to claim his throne. And that’s just the start of the adventure. On her way out of the Silvia Lupi, Queen Arna has laid a curse on the kingdom that’s triggered by Wendell claiming the throne. In addition to trying to make herself into a queen the […]

The book, "Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries" by Heather Fawcett is standing in front of two books with fairies on their covers.

“To peel back the carpeting of the world and tumble into the stars.”

Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

I read Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries in two days.  Since I didn’t want to start a new book until I caught up on reviews, I decided to read it again. It took only two days to read it a second time.  What I’m saying is that I enjoyed this book so much I read it twice in four days.  Written in the style of a personal journal, Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries is an engaging fantasy set in an alternative 1909 where fae, fairies, Fair […]

despite reading them months apart, the reviews will go up in the same day

Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett

here is the issue I just do not remember enough of what happened in this book, and since it’s been literally six months+ since I finished it (or so Goodreads tells me, I Do. Not. Recall) it’s a very slim chance that I will remember more of it by staring very intently at my computer screen. SO, down a rabbit hole I go, trying to find reviews written by fellow readers who provide spoilers. Except, of course, everyone is being kind and staying as spoiler […]

I can’t believe I only met Emily this year

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

December 9, 2024 by wicherwill 3 Comments

It should come as no surprise that I enjoyed this, given its premise. The story features a straight-laced female lead who never faces the typical chastisement for her demeanor…nor does she undergo some clichéd transformation where she “relaxes,” à la all those ’90s teenage films (even you, 10 Things I Hate About You) (even if Kat was just doing shots to express her frustration) (Yes, I did just rewatch this—why do you ask?) The juxtaposition with our neural chaotic male lead, Wendell Bambleby, who is, […]

Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries I am impressed by the breadth of research and creativity that went into this adventurous fantasy. There is so much information about faeries from all over, and some of it is provided almost as an aside, like a mention that Maltese fae are “more troublesome than average, having an unfortunate habit of creeping into houses at night to feast upon slumberers’ vital organs.” This kind of knowledge being tossed off in such an offhand way fits with the main character […]

Academia, Fae, and Falling In Love

Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

April 28, 2024 by Kit Moonstar 4 Comments

Emily Wilde has come to Hrafnsvik in order to finish her book.  A researcher of the Faerie, Emily is good at research, less so with people.  But this book will make her academic career, and she is determined to finish it.  Of course, that means dealing with the local villagers as well as her acadmic rival Wendell Brambleby, who she’s almost certain is one of the Folk himself, who has showed up.  But even as Emily gets closer to discovering the secrets of the Hidden […]
